    Machine-to-machine communication has attracted a lot of interest in the mobile communication industry and is under standardization process in 3GPP. In addition to the higher throughput, one of the main advantages of LTE/LTE-A in comparison with the previous cellular networks is the reduced transmission latency, which makes this type of networks very attractive for real-time mobile M2M communication scenarios. This paper presents a M2M system architecture based on LTE/LTE-A and highlights the delays associated with each part of the system. Three real-time M2M applications are analyzed and the main latency bottlenecks are identified. Proposals on how the latency can be further reduced are described.

It is based on a network model that combines various types of coverage areas (dense urban, urban, suburban and rural), and hence various types of network configuration in terms of cell density and size, area of coverage, and customer base are used. The study considers as financial indicator the net present value (NPV) for a five year period, and presents sensitivity graphs for the effects of critical parameters of the network design on NPV. It is shown that the FUTON network solution has very promising financial perspectives.

  • Radio Propagation

    Radio wave propagation is a key topic for an in‐building wireless system designer, and has its foundations in electromagnetic theory principles. The existence of propagating electromagnetic waves can be predicted as a direct consequence of Maxwell's equations. Maxwell's curl equations contain constants of proportionality, which dictate the strengths of the fields. In free space, many types of waves can exist, which satisfy Maxwell's equations; that is constitute valid solutions. Amongst the most popular ones are spherical, cylindrical and plane waves. Maxwell's curl equations also dictate special behaviour when impinging on a material. The chapter discusses the median path loss, fast fading, shadowing (slow fading) and building penetration loss. A deep understanding of the propagation mechanisms that affect link performance is thus essential if path loss and/or signal strength is to be predicted inside buildings with reasonable accuracy.

  • System Requirements

    An indoor wireless system is based on a set of requirements that should be met if the system is to deliver the required quality‐of‐service (QoS) for each of the offered services. This chapter describes the definition of such requirements in a general context for any wireless communication system. It highlights and explains specific requirements depending on technology may vary and differences. Many of these requirements are established on the basis that a minimum signal quality is expected in the wireless system, for sound performance. There are many factors which should be taken into account when specifying requirements. The chapter summarizes these factors. One key aspect to take into consideration when performing system upgrades in an indoor system is the type of traffic that needs to be handled. In the early days of mobile communications, voice was the main driver and all efforts were around the provision of good voice quality to customers.

  • Signal shaping for PMSE protection

    Cognitive ratio has attracted a lot of research interest already for more than ten years, since it creates great possibilities for efficient spectrum utilization. However, the cognitive transmission assumes that the signal of the licensed users will be protected. In this work the dynamic protection methods of the primary users is considered, in particular the application of the cancellation carriers method combined with the windowing process is investigated in a non-contiguous multicarrier transmission. The novelty of this work is the derivation of the optimal number of subcarriers that have to be deactivated by the secondary user in order to keep the interference introduced to the primary user under the allowed threshold while providing the highest possible data rate to the cognitive radio.
