A new artificial neural network (ANN) architecture for classification of event-related potential (ERP) waveforms is proposed. The new architecture is called the parallel principal component neural network (PPCNN). The use of PPCNN is discussed in terms of classification of ERP data obtained from chronic schizophrenic patients and from normal volunteers.

    The IBM zEnterprise® 196 achieves substantial performance gains over prior designs across the full spectrum of workloads being run on today's enterprise information technology systems, ranging from large data-intensive transaction processing workloads to central processing unit-intensive business applications. Each of these required innovations in the design of the hardware, software, and instruction-set architecture (ISA) with performance gains coming from several sources: the out-of-order microprocessor core design, the multilevel cache structure, new ISA facilities, and additional ISA extensions to enable efficient scaling of large multiprocessor operating system images. These enhancements were achieved through collaborative development among hardware, software, compiler, architecture, and performance analysis teams. This paper describes the performance contributions from these sources, with particular focus on the new architectural facilities.

    A design interface with process plan is an essential part of systems integration process in enterprise resource planning (ERP). By interfacing with a process plan module, a design interface module helps the sequence of individual operations needed for the step-by-step production of a finished product from raw materials. In order to carry out the process planing by means of a computer, it is necessary to develop a method of automatically obtaining the information required for process planning from 3D geometric data by means of a computer. The present study relates to a method of automatically extracting a feature necessary for integrating the process planing into a design by means of a computer from 3D geometric data taken from a CAD system.

  • The Neurophysiologic Difference between Shy and Nonshy Undergraduates in Early Face Processing: An ERP Study

    Now the neurophysiologic studies of shyness focus on the influence of expressional valence and facial new-old effects on face processing, but these studies disregard the possible neurophysiologic differences in the basic face recognition ability --face and object recognition. This study tries to find the neurophysiologic differences between 17 shy undergraduates and 17 nonshy undergraduates in facial structural encoding by adopting ERP and seeing about the N170 component in face recognition. According to the study, we find that: (1) nonshy undergraduates have processing dominance on facial configuration, the N170 amplitude of nonshy undergraduates is much greater than that of shy undergraduates when viewing the face, but the difference does not exist between shy and nonshy undergraduates when viewing objects; (2) N170 is a specific component to face recognition, N170 amplitude elicited by face pictures is much greater than that elicited by object pictures; (3) The right hemisphere shows processing dominance on N170 when processing faces.

  • Context-Based Information Quality Self-Managing System Using Simulation-Based Analysis

    The objective of this paper is to propose an information quality (IQ) self- managing system using Reconfigurable Event-Driven Process Chain (R-EPC) simulation based analysis, which is capable to monitor network status, evaluate IQ, generate assuring strategies, and apply it to the network. To do this, we have employed the R-EPC formalism concept based on the advanced modeling and simulation environment for developing information security models and simulation-based evaluation of IQ as well as assuring strategy. Our approach differs from others in that a) it is able to analyze IQ on node, link, and network in quantitative manner, b) it can generate and apply assuring strategies automatically, and c) it supports a coherent design concept for IQ self-managing system. A case study performed on a test bed will illustrate our techniques and demonstrate effectiveness of propose system.

  • An ICA Approach for Extracting Task-related Components from EEG signals

    Independent component analysis (ICA) is suggested to be useful in the analysis of signals (electroencephalography (EEG) and event-related potential (ERP)) recorded from the scalp electrodes to examine brain activity. But ICA analysis of ERP has the problem that it lacks validity across subjects. Therefore, we examined a new approach to give validity across subjects to ICA results obtained from single subjects. To do this, we combined two criteria of how much a single subject's signals contain task-related components and the similarity of the spatial patterns of those task-related components across subjects. We applied our approach to EEG data recorded in an experiment. As a result, analysis with a combination of ICA and our approach extracted significantly more task-related components from the observed signals than analysis without the combination did, although both analyses suggested that the occipital area activity was most relevant to performing the task across subjects. These results suggest that our approach is useful for extracting task-related components from the observed EEG signals and for giving validity across subjects in ICA analysis of EEG/ERP
