Life members

What Are Life Members?

Life members are a distinguished grade of membership within IEEE, awarded automatically to long-serving members who meet specific age and tenure criteria. The designation recognizes decades of dedication to the engineering and technology professions and carries financial benefits, including the waiver of annual dues and regional assessments. Within IEEE's membership structure, which spans Student, Associate Member, Member, Senior Member, and Fellow grades, the Life Member grade sits outside the standard elevation pathway: it is conferred by time and commitment rather than by peer nomination or examination.

The concept of a lifetime membership in a professional engineering society predates IEEE itself. The grade of Life first appeared in the constitution of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) in 1884, when the organization permitted any member to secure permanent dues-exempt standing through a one-time payment. When the AIEE merged with the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE) in 1963 to form IEEE, the Life Member grade carried forward and has remained a core feature of IEEE's membership framework ever since, as documented in the IEEE Life Members Committee History.

Membership Grade Criteria

IEEE Life Member status is conferred automatically, without application, when two conditions are both satisfied: the member has reached at least 65 years of age, and the sum of the member's age in years and years of IEEE membership equals or exceeds 100. A member who joins at 25 and remains active for 40 years would qualify at 65, while a member who joined at 30 would qualify when the combined total crosses 100. Once the threshold is met, the status takes effect on January 1 of the following year, and IEEE notifies qualifying members by mail. Dues and regional assessments are waived from that date forward, as described in IEEE's Life Member program guidelines.

The Life Members Community

Life Members are not simply inactive honorary members. IEEE maintains an organized Life Members community through its regional structure, providing networking opportunities, educational excursions, mentoring programs, and community engagement initiatives. Life Members participate in IEEE sections and regional activities, often serving as mentors to students and early-career engineers. The community is coordinated through the IEEE Life Members Committee, a body whose governance traces directly to the AIEE's original Life Member arrangements and which manages both outreach activities and the allocation of dedicated funds.

Life Members Fund and Grants

Voluntary annual contributions from Life Members support the IEEE Life Members Fund, which finances programs of direct professional and historical value. A prominent beneficiary is the IEEE Life Members' Fellowship in Electrical History, administered by the IEEE History Committee. This fellowship funds up to one year of full-time graduate study or post-doctoral research in the history of electrical science and computing technology, with a stipend of US$25,000 plus a research budget. The Fund also supports educational grants, student engagement activities, and regional initiatives proposed by Life Member groups worldwide.

Applications

The Life Members designation and its associated programs have relevance across several areas of IEEE activity, including:

  • Professional recognition and long-term member retention in engineering societies
  • History of technology research, through the Life Members' Fellowship in Electrical History
  • Mentoring and educational outreach connecting experienced engineers with students
  • Governance and volunteer leadership within IEEE sections and regional bodies
