What Is the Life Members Committee?

The Life Members Committee (LMC) is a joint standing committee of IEEE and the IEEE Foundation chartered to serve the interests of IEEE Life Members, the grade awarded to long-tenured members who are at least 65 years old and whose combined age and years of membership total 100 or more. The committee provides organizational leadership for this segment of the membership, administers the Life Members Fund, and coordinates the network of regional Life Members Affinity Groups. The LMC traces its institutional roots to 1944, when the IEEE Board of Directors approved a formal charter and Rules and Regulations for a Life Member Fund Committee, establishing the governance structure that has persisted through several organizational evolutions. When IEEE was formed by the merger of the AIEE and the IRE in 1963, the committee's structure and mandate carried forward intact. Today it functions as a permanent body with representation from both IEEE's operational governance and the IEEE Foundation, reflecting the dual role of coordinating member services and stewarding donated funds.

Charter and Governance

The committee's formal mandate is to act in the best interests of IEEE Life Members, encourage their continued participation in IEEE activities at all organizational levels, and manage the financial assets of the Life Members Fund. Per the IEEE Life Members Committee leadership page, the committee is chaired by an elected Life Member and includes committee members drawn from across IEEE's regional structure, alongside two representatives from the IEEE Foundation.
