What Is Digital TV?

Digital TV is a system for transmitting and receiving television content in which video, audio, and associated data are encoded as binary digital signals rather than as the amplitude- or frequency-modulated analog waveforms used by earlier broadcast systems. Digital TV encompasses the full chain from studio production through signal encoding, transmission, and final display on a receiver. The transition from analog to digital television, often called the DTV transition, proceeded country by country over roughly two decades from the late 1990s into the 2010s, with the reclaimed analog spectrum reallocated for mobile broadband and other wireless services.

The technical foundations of digital TV draw on digital signal processing, information theory, and RF engineering. Key contributions include MPEG-based video compression, which reduces the bit rate of high-definition video to levels compatible with broadcast channel bandwidths, and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), which provides robustness against multipath interference in terrestrial channels.

Signal Processing and Encoding

A digital TV broadcast chain consists of a series of digital signal processing stages. Raw video from cameras is compressed using codecs such as MPEG-2, H.264/AVC, or H.265/HEVC, each successive generation roughly doubling compression efficiency relative to its predecessor. Audio is compressed using formats including Dolby AC-3, HE-AAC, or the open AC-4 standard. The compressed elementary streams are packaged into MPEG-2 Transport Stream packets and multiplexed for transmission. Forward error correction codes, including Reed-Solomon and low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, are applied before modulation so that receivers can recover data lost to noise or signal fading.

The transmission medium determines the modulation scheme. Terrestrial DVB-T2 broadcasts use OFDM with up to 32,768 subcarriers and can carry multiple program streams within a single 8 MHz channel. Satellite DVB-S2 employs DVB-S2X extensions with higher-order modulation for increased spectral efficiency. Cable DVB-C uses QAM modulation suited to the lower-noise cable environment. HbbTV and Hybrid Services

Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV (HbbTV) is a standard that allows TV broadcasters to deliver supplementary applications and services through an internet connection alongside the linear broadcast stream. An HbbTV-enabled television receiver monitors the broadcast signal for an application information table (AIT) embedded in the transport stream, which triggers a browser-based application to launch automatically. These applications can display catch-up video, interactive program guides, audience voting, targeted advertising, and linked web content. HbbTV is coordinated by the HbbTV Association and standardized through ETSI and DVB working groups. The standard has been adopted across most of Europe and a growing number of markets in Asia and Latin America, enabling broadcasters to extend their reach without requiring viewers to navigate separate streaming platforms.

Digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB), developed in South Korea, extends digital TV delivery to handheld mobile devices using a variant of DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) technology. DMB transmits video and audio using H.264 compression over a bandwidth-efficient time-division multiplexed channel, allowing free-to-air mobile TV reception on smartphones and portable devices.

The DTV Transition

The shift from analog to digital broadcasting involved coordinated regulatory, technical, and logistical planning at national levels. In the United States, the Federal Communications Commission mandated a full-power analog cutoff date of June 12, 2009, following a brief delay from the originally scheduled February date.
