Modelling of integrated systems for modular linearisation-based analysis and design

We propose micro Barkhausen-Kurz oscillators suitable for operation at THz frequencies and can be fabricated along-side CMOS or III-V ICs. Electron dynamics will be described along with theoretical and particle-in-cell simulation results. Device performance and limitations will be discussed with emphasis on scaling of properties with frequency. Preliminary cathode and repeller structures made on silicon will be shown.

  • Integrated Systems Analysis Software for Interdependency Analysis of Railway Systems

    As the complexity of railway network increases, tools and methods for analyzing the interactions and behaviors of railway systems are needed by system engineers. This paper aims to design and develop an integrated systems analysis software (ISAS) that can efficiently access the railway integrated system design information and effectively analyze the interdependencies of railway systems, thereby increasing work productivity while reducing time and labor costs. With Microsoft Access, a relational database management system, the proposed ISAS can also extract information relevant to the user query, display it on a user-friendly graphical user interface, and summarize it in an easy-to-read report to facilitate system design discussions and meetings.

  • Design of future integrated systems: A cyber-physical systems approach

    Summary form only given. In this talk, we address some fundamental issues related to the modeling and optimization of power and performance of next generation of integrated systems while taking a cyber-physical approach. As such, the focus of the design methodology is not only on establishing a reliable communication infrastructure between the computational elements, but also on in-cluding time, communication, and feedback-based control as intrinsic components of the programming model; this goal allows us generalize the classical computational paradigm such that more direct interaction between the cyber-system and physical world becomes possible. Starting from these overarching ideas, we argue that the complex requirements for high-performance and low-power design, as well as reliable and safe operation of future integrated systems call for a truly multidisciplinary approach which brings together concepts and techniques from real-time computing and signal processing, multiprocessor architecture and OS design, as well as distributed and self-organized control.

However, in parallel, there will be an increasing activity involving the integration of silicon with other technologies and new materials, and it is clear that MEMS will form an important component of this Silicon+ activity. This paper identifies the options available for integrating MEMS with IC technology and examples will be used to identify the issues associated with their implementation through a number of examples.

  • A system-on-chip platform for the internet of things featuring a 32-bit RISC-V based microcontroller

    A tested and measured 32-bit microcontroller used as an open-source platform for Internet of Things is presented. An AXI-4 lite bus is used for communication considering the possible implementation of accelerators for specialized applications. The implemented SoC occupies a 2.1mm × 2.1mm area in a 130nm CMOS. The SoC has a dynamic power of 167μW measured from a 1.2V when the core is clocked at 100MHz. The SoC has been tested at maximum speed of 160MHz. It is the first silicon-proven 32-bit microcontroller sporting a RISC-V core.

  • The integration of EWOD and SAW technologies for improved droplet manipulation and mixing

    This paper details the first reported integration of two advanced digital microfluidic technologies where 100 mum silicon cubes are transported with electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD) and the droplet then held with EWOD while the silicon cubes are mixed with another liquid using a surface acoustic wave (SAW). Together these two technologies provide a comprehensive lab-on-a-chip combination with well developed functionalities. These include droplet generation, splitting and transportation offered by EWOD with transportation, mixing and biosensing being potentially available with SAW. The fabrication of both EWOD and SAW structures on LiNbO<sub>3</sub> substrates used low temperature Ta/Ta<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub>/CYTOP layer deposition and patterning technologies, which enabled efficient transportation and mixing functions to be demonstrated.

  • A 32-bit RISC-V AXI4-lite bus-based microcontroller with 10-bit SAR ADC

    In this paper a complete implementation and design of a fully-synthesized 32-bit microcontroller in a 130nm CMOS technology is presented. This is the first microcontroller featuring the open source RISC-V instruction set all mounted through AXI4-Lite and APB buses for communication process. The microcontroller contains a 10-bit SAR ADC, a 12-bit DAC, an 8-bit GPIO module, a 4kB-RAM, an SPI AXI slave interface for output verification, and an SPI APB slave interface for checking the correct behavioral of the APB bridge. All peripherals are controlled by a RISC-V and an SPI AXI master interface that is used for programming the device and checking the data flowing through all the slaves. A total power density is reported as 167μW/MHz and the area for this RISC-V microcontroller has a reduced footprint of 798μm×484μm.
