This paper addresses the problem of noise attenuation for multichannel data. Two multichannel filters which utilize adaptively determined data dependent coefficients are introduced. The special case of colour image processing is studied as an important example of multichannel signal processing.     A new blockwise distortion measure is proposed to evaluate the quality of lossy compressed multispectral images. The measure is based on blockwise distortions which are calculated between the original multispectral image and the compressed/reconstructed multispectral image. The calculated measures with various compression ratios are matched to a visual scale which is based on the mean opinion score (MOS). The nonlinear weighting using neural network is used for matching. The results from the new measure are compared to mean-square- error (MSE) based measures, to two-dimensional blockwise distortion measure, and to picture quality scale for grayscale images. The multispectral images are compressed using multiwavelets, principal component analysis, and DCT/JPEG.

    In this paper we conduct a statistical analysis of the sensitivity and consistency behavior of objective image quality measures. We categorize the quality measures and compare them for still image compression applications. The measures have been categorized into pixel difference-based, correlation- based, edge-based, spectral-based, context-based and HVS-based (Human Visual System-based) measures. The mutual relationships between the measures are visualized by plotting their Kohonen maps. Their consistency and sensitivity to coding as well as additive noise and blur are investigated via ANOVA analysis of their scores. It has been found that measures based on HVS, on phase spectrum and on multiresolution mean square error are most discriminative to coding artifacts.

  • Interactive demonstrations of the locally adaptive fusion for combining objective quality measures

    To automate quality monitoring of multimedia applications, objective quality measures for images and video content need to be designed. Objective quality measures that model the Human Visual System (HVS) have a disappointing performance, because the HVS is not sufficiently understood. Integrating machine learning (ML) techniques may increase the performance. Unfortunately, traditional ML is difficult to interpret. To this end, we developed the Locally Adaptive Fusion (LAF), for more flexible and reliable quality predictions. This manuscript proposes six interactive programs and a website that demonstrate the effectiveness of LAF, which complement the technical focus of the corresponding journal paper.

  • YACBIR: Yet Another Content Based Image Retrieval System

    Vision is central in human perception. Images are everywhere. Real life applications produce and use huge amounts of different types images. Retrieving an image having some characteristics in a big database is a crucial task. We need then mechanisms for indexing and retrieving images. CBIR (Content Based Image Retrieval) systems perform these tasks by indexing images using the physical characteristics automatically extracted and searching by an image query. We will present a CBIR system named YACBIR (Yet Another CBIR) that combines several properties (color, texture and points of interest) extracted automatically to index and retrieve images.

  • A lane keeping system with a weighted preview measurement

    This paper proposes a new lane keeping system (LKS) based on a weighted preview measurement. The paper first identifies shortcomings of existing methods that use the sole measurement of lateral displacement error at a preview distance or at the center of gravity. Then, the novel idea of computing a weighted average of both measurements is proposed. The stability of the resulting LKS is analyzed and the improved performance of the resulting LKS is supported by simulation experiments.

  • A novel method for measuring the weight in a goods carrier

    This paper proposes a new method for measuring the weight of the goods carried in a goods carrier. The proposed system is very efficient in its measurement and costs low on the packets of its users besides being more environment friendly than the existing system. A detailed study of the proposed system is carried out along with the means of calibrating it. The whole system is automated using microcontroller 89S52.
