2020 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics (SMC)

The 2020 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics (SMC 2020) will be held in Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC), Toronto, Ontario, Canada. SMC 2020 is the flagship conference of the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society. It provides an international forum for researchers and practitioners to report most recent innovations and developments, summarize state-of-the-art, and exchange ideas and advances in all aspects of systems science and engineering, human machine systems, and cybernetics. Advances in these fields have increasing importance in the creation of intelligent environments involving technologies interacting with humans to provide an enriching experience and thereby improve quality of life. Papers related to the conference theme are solicited, including theories, methodologies, and emerging applications. Contributions to theory and practice, including but not limited to the following technical areas, are invited.


Oceans 2020 MTS/IEEE GULF COAST

To promote awareness, understanding, advancement and application of ocean engineering and marine technology. This includes all aspects of science, engineering, and technology that address research, development, and operations pertaining to all bodies of water.   • Constructing Internet futures exchange for teaching derivatives trading in financial markets

    Simulations and games are widely accepted as a powerful mode of teaching and learning. This is especially so in the field of finance in teaching students the intricacies of stock market trading. In this study, we leverage the power of Internet technology and design a fully functional Internet futures exchange. With respect to academic research, we provide an example of the use of our Internet futures exchange as a research platform to address the issue of market transparency and front runners. This, in itself is an important research question since market transparency level lies at the heart of controversial debates. Empirical data gathered from a controlled laboratory setting may help resolve the controversy. Previous laboratory studies addressing this issue use simplified representations of financial exchanges based on simulated securities whose values are chosen randomly form some predetermined distribution. For our study, we construct a fully functional futures exchange based on real underlying securities on the Internet and conduct our experiments on this exchange. Our obtained results should be more robust than those obtained from simplified financial exchanges used in previous studies. We also analyze the relation between market transparency and front runners. No previous research has been done analyzing this issue in detail. In our study, we make use of our constructed fully functional Internet futures exchange and gather empirical data under alternative exchange designs and varying levels of transparency and front-runner participation. The effect of varying levels of front runner participation on the bid-ask spread and on trading gains and losses can be tested for. Additionally, the effect of varying levels of front runner order quantity (order size) can be tested for.

In this paper the authors show the design considerations that have to be taken into account for the realization of the two devices.

    Web systems have reached a very important role in today's business world. Every day organizations fight to keep their present clients and to gain new ones. In order to accomplish this goal it is very important to make precise changes in the Web site content. However, the development of these improvements is a complex and specialized task because of the nature of the Web data itself. We propose a novel approach to successfully make changes to improve the Web site content using text mining. We use a self organizing feature map (SOFM) to find the most relevant text content, and then we propose a reverse clustering analysis in order to extract the most significant pages of the whole Web site. The effectiveness of this method was experimentally tested in a real Web site.

  • H3: laying out large directed graphs in 3D hyperbolic space

    We present the H3 layout technique for drawing large directed graphs as node- link diagrams in 3D hyperbolic space. We can lay out much larger structures than can be handled using traditional techniques for drawing general graphs because we assume a hierarchical nature of the data. We impose a hierarchy on the graph by using domain-specific knowledge to find an appropriate spanning tree. Links which are not part of the spanning tree do not influence the layout but can be selectively drawn by user request. The volume of hyperbolic 3-space increases exponentially, as opposed to the familiar geometric increase of euclidean 3-space. We exploit this exponential amount of room by computing the layout according to the hyperbolic metric. We optimize the cone tree layout algorithm for 3D hyperbolic space by placing children on a hemisphere around the cone mouth instead of on its perimeter. Hyperbolic navigation affords a Focus+Context view of the structure with minimal visual clutter. We have successfully laid out hierarchies of over 20,000 nodes. Our implementation accommodates navigation through graphs too large to be rendered interactively by allowing the user to explicitly prune or expand subtrees.

  • Motivating and supporting faculty use of educational digital libraries: an example from the geosciences

    The authors explore how the portal of a digital library can be designed to influence the behavior of its users. The example is the Starting Point Digital Library, an education digital library designed primarily for faculty teaching introductory level geoscience. The specific goal of the Starting Point library is to increase faculty knowledge of the full range of teaching methods that can be used in their classes so that they will be better positioned to design and implement introductory geoscience courses that support student learning. Our design is based on an in-depth look at how geoscience faculty think about and prepare for teaching developed through one-on-one interviews with a small sample of geoscience faculty.

  • An information development/knowledge transfer initiative to help achieve total customer satisfaction and ISO 9000 registration

    An information development knowledge transfer (ID/KT) initiative, when properly implemented, can lead not only total customer satisfaction, but registration with any of the widely recognized quality programs (ISO 9000, SEI, Malcolm Baldrige). A true ID/KT initiative involves everyone in the content development stream: technical writers, editors, Web site programmers/developers, multimedia developers, trainers, and graphics designers. Each has specific knowledge and skills that transform technical content into knowledge that is transferable to users of that information and manageable as a corporate (intellectual) asset. Organisations wanting to achieve ISO 9000 status or just deliver the best customer documentation possible need to reduce or even eliminate variability in their documentation process. This paper explores the contribution that content developers provide and offers suggestions for organizations on how to plan a coordinated ID/KT initiative.
