Spatial vector solitons consisting of counter-propagating mutually coherent fields

We present the first experimental observation of a spatial vector soliton formed by counter-propagating mutually coherent optical fields. This vector soliton induces a waveguide and a thick grating within the waveguide, which can be used as a tunable optical waveguide filter.


Three-Dimensional Imaginary-Distance BPM Simulation of a Partially Metal-Loaded Optical Waveguide

The eigenmode characteristics of a partially metal-loaded waveguide are studied using the imaginary-distance BPM and compared with those estimated from Marcatili's method. The minimum propagation loss is found to be about 4 dB/mm at a wavelength of 0.6328 mum.

A new design mitigates multimode waveguide behavior in an optofluidic platform and increases fundamental mode coupling to 95%. Experimental results yield excellent agreement with simulations and demonstrate a suitable device for optical particle manipulation.

  • Interference of guiding polariton modes in “traffic” circle waveguides

    The interference of polariton guiding modes propagating through the waveguide composed of dielectric spherical particles forming the ldquotrafficrdquo circle docked by two linear entrance and exit chains is investigated. The dependence of intensity of the polariton wave on the position of the particle on the circle was studied using the multisphere Mie scattering formalism. We show that, if the frequency of light belongs to the pass band of the circular part of this waveguide, the electromagnetic waves may be considered as two optical beams running along the circle in opposite directions and interfering with each other. Indeed, the obtained intensity behavior can be represented as a simple superposition of two waves propagating along the circle in opposite directions. The applications of this interference are discussed.

  • A partially metal-clad-dielectric-slab waveguide for integrated optics

    Characteristics of a partially metal-clad-dielectric-slab waveguide are described. In this waveguide a propagating field is confined two-dimensionally by the difference of effective indices of refraction between a dielectric-clad region and a metal-clad region. Experimental results are also described.
