The 2020 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics (SMC 2020) will be held in Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC), Toronto, Ontario, Canada. SMC 2020 is the flagship conference of the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society. It provides an international forum for researchers and practitioners to report most recent innovations and developments, summarize state-of-the-art, and exchange ideas and advances in all aspects of systems science and engineering, human machine systems, and cybernetics.   • MCS-PSO based risk programming for virtual enterprise

    This paper designes a Monte Carlo Simulation combined Particle Swarm Optimization (MCS-PSO) for the stochastic risk programming model of virtual enterprise (VE). The stochastic characters of the risk in VE are considered, which are described by random variables. So a stochastic programming model is proposed for risk management of VE. In detail, this is a chance constraint programming model, One of the great advantages of this class of model is that it can actually describe the risk preference of the manager. When the number of risk factors and the number of actions increase, the size of the problem will be huge. Therefore Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is employed to sovle the problem. On the other hand, to deal with the random variables, Monte Carlo Simulation is combined with PSO (MCS-PSO). Finally, numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the MCS-PSO and the result shows that the risk programming model is very useful for VE.

The formal semantics of activity diagrams and the standardized mapping technique from activity diagrams to message sequence charts are introduced.   • Cultural particle swarm optimization algorithm and its application

    Based on cultural algorithm and classical particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, a cultural particle swarm optimization (CPSO) algorithm is proposed. In the improved algorithm, double evolutionary mechanisms are used. The population space and the belief space of cultural algorithm are redesigned. The proposed model was used to solve the partner selection problem of virtual enterprise. In a virtual enterprise, the whole task can be accomplished by the cooperation among those candidate partners. The optimal objective is to minimize the total cost and completing time. Finally, the performance of the algorithm is evaluated by simulations. Results demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

  • An exploration of technology intensity measures

    Technological activity is defined to mean the approaches firms use to translate research and development (R&D) efforts into advances in their respective product and process technologies. These R&D efforts, then, have the potential to provide competitive advantage resulting in improved performance. Several studies conducted in the past have not established any definite relationship between R&D investment (measured in terms of R&D expenditure) and firm performance. One possible reason could be that R&D expenditure per se does not contribute to a firm's success. However, if one could measure the accumulation of knowledge and technological strength resulting from R&D efforts then one might find a determinant of firm performance. This is the connecting link between R&D effort and firm performance. The authors first review a variety of papers which report on studies which have attempted to show the linkage between technological activity and technological intensity with firm performance. They then follow this up with a summary of two studies by the authors which introduce technological intensity measures based on patent activity and patent attributes. They then conclude with a review of a variety of firm performance measures based on both accounting, market, and sales data.
