Technology '88: communications

IEEE Spectrum, 1988

Developments during 1987 are highlighted. Notable among them are big gains for mobile communications, the growing use of optical fiber, open networks for providers of services, and the success of the French videotex system. An expert opinion is offered by Eric Nussbaum, assistant vice president of Bell Communications Research Inc.'s network systems and services research laboratory, who discusses the progress ...

Advanced public transport passenger information: Findings of the EuroBus Project

Proceedings of VNIS '93 - Vehicle Navigation and Information Systems Conference, 1993

Some of the findings of the EuroBus Project concerning the design of advanced and standardized terminals for public transport passenger information in Europe are presented. The EuroBus prototypes address a set of requirements defined in common, particularly at the level of the external layer perceived by the user. In each city, they use an EC-compatible database (Transmodel data model), and ...

Monolithic Filter and its Application to TV MPX Sound Decoder IC

IEEE Transactions on Consumer Electronics, 1983

In addition to giving the best possible picture and sound quality, today's color TV set is also required to absorb all of the reception expansions, such as sound multiplex, teletext, be able to be interfaced with video recorders and videotex, etc. The color TV is expected to do all this without a great increase in cost, and, of course, at ...

EDS: towards the information age

ISSLS 88., International Symposium on Subscriber Loops and Services, 1988

The French Electronic Directory Service (EDS) has achieved a 17% market penetration. The number of network components has doubled within two years. An overview of service planning is given, the flexible and distributed system architecture is described, and enhancements for new information features and revenues are detailed.<<ETX>>

The EuroBus prototypes address a set of requirements defined in common, particularly at the level of the external layer perceived by the user. In each city, they use an EC-compatible database (Transmodel data model), and a geographical information system (GIS) on the city network. The resulting product is either an interactive street terminal or a desktop workstation for telephone enquiry offices. The compatibility with audiotex or videotex servers and automated printouts (maps, timetables) is also considered.

The fundamental parts of the color TV system need to be standardized. If the signal processing parts were standardized, dimensions and power consumption decreased, these parts could be used in all sets, even pocket-sized televisions, and the number of engineers working on these fundamental systems could be reduced.

  • Afterword: Evolving towards OSI

Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) will be achieved gradually by evolution over the next decade. The initial standards required to achieve simple systems interconnection for file transfer and message handling will be finalized by the end of 1984. Government and industry are cooperating to provide the single family of standards which users need. Computer manufacturers and network providers are planning to provide evolutionary growth paths to OSI for their users. A major U.S. national demonstration of OSI is planned for 1984. By the end of the decade, open systems information exchange will be commonplace in North America, Europe, and Japan.

  • Image display techniques using the cosine transform

Transform coding has the ability to rapidly display a picture of low resolution by inverse transformation of a few of the low sequency coefficients only. Picture resolution is then progressively built up as more coefficients are received and decoded. In this paper, different sequences of transmitting the coefficients are investigated to find one which achieves the best subjective quality with the fewest coefficients transmitted and requiring the least overhead information. Five schemes are examined on two source images with different statistics to compare the effectiveness of the schemes to achieve the above objectives on each of the images.

  • Lucy/Lucinda--A Fully Integrated Solution to Videotex Terminal Interfaces

This paper describes how switched-capacitor techniques can be employed to achieve the monolithic integration of all the analogue circuitry required in a Videotex MODEM. The application of these techniques leads to a low cost fully integrated solution to the Videotex MODEM suitable for use in both Videotex terminals and home computers.
