    The dominant VLSI technology for the next decade will be CMOS. Emerging technologies such as GaAs FETs, AlGaAs high electron mobility transistors, AlGaAs heterojunction bipolar transistors and Si bipolar transistors are all attempting to demonstrate performance advantages and specialized applications for each technology . . . The panel will address the potential role of these niche technologies in a CMOS VLSI dominated era.

  • The beauty of 'almost standard' VLSI

    The authors discuss the advantages of semistandard VLSI, which lets a designer choose the chip for its standard features and then have the expert chip maker add special characteristics. They compare them with two other kinds of application-specific IC (ASIC), custom and semicustom VLSI chips. They describe four different ways to utilize semistandard chips and the benefit and drawbacks of each. They conclude by discussing what to expect from the semistandard approach.<<ETX>>

  • FOLM-planner: A new floorplanner with a frame overlapping floorplan model suitable for SOG (sea-of-gates) type gate arrays

    A floorplanner, FOLM-planner, suitable for SOG gate arrays is presented. FOLM- planner is based on a 'frame overlapping floorplan model, which is free from unnecessary constraints caused by conventional floorplan models, and is easy to use for satisfying timing constraints. FOLM-planner aims at minimizing the net length among frames and controlling frame overlaps for efficient usage of a chip area. To accomplish these objectives, FOLM-planner uses a newly developed force directed method for frame reshaping as well as moving. Experimental results have shown that FOLM layout can shorten the net length inside a frame without the total net length becoming longer.<<ETX>>
