  • Cable towed body dynamics

    In recent years a large number of towed bodies for military and commerieal ocean engineering purposes have been put into service. A general trend in this activity is that towed bodies are getting larger, towing speed is getting faster and the operating depth of towed bodies is getting deeper. Towing vehicle, tow line and towed body are not only subjected to ocean wave, wind and current but also subjected to vibration excitation force due to flow around tow line and machinery of towing vehicle. In this paper the equilibrium attitude and altitude of towed body, and equilibrium configuration of cable when towing vehicle is advancing at constant speed is discussed. In addition, the dynamic characteristics of tow line due to tow point motion excitation is discussed. Finally, the considerations required to select a right tow line for the towing applications are listed.

    The story of success of software product line engineering and software variability, as the cornerstone to support the diversity of the product portfolio is widely recognized by software companies. Nowadays, the complexity of new software‐intensive systems demanding development challenges, such as runtime reconfiguration operations, autonomous behavior, and swarm capabilities among others, makes the weakness of current software variability techniques explicit as feature models are unable to reconfigure themselves. Therefore, we address in this chapter the challenges, problems, and solutions that dynamic variability can offer, and we also highlight the role of dynamic software product lines as emerging software development paradigm.

  • Efficient Acknowledgement and Retransmission Techniques for Bus-Systems

    For safety-relevant distributed systems a reliable communication system is a necessity where message losses can be detected by an acknowledgement technique and processed by retransmission. In this paper we propose and evaluate two different efficient algorithms for message acknowledgement and retransmission. The algorithms cause particularly low overhead when applied to a bus communication system. The first algorithm requires special hardware whereas the second doesn't. The second algorithm can be implemented efficiently by software for communication systems that periodically switch between time- triggered and event-triggered transmission, such as FlexRay.

  • Antenna Mechanic-structural fatigue in the 34-meter HA-dec antennas

    Three 26-m hour-angle/declination (HA-dec) antennas, designed for a life span of 20 years, were built in the early 1960s for the NASA Deep Space Network. After 16 years the antennas were upgraded. The design required a structural weight increase of about 50% in both the HA and dec structures to achieve the desired improvements. The fatigue caused by the resulting stress-reversal conditions is discussed. The structural failures and their analyses are described.<<ETX>>

  • Situation-aware trust architecture for vehicular networks

    We present a new trust architecture-Situation-Aware Trust-to address several important trust issues in vehicular networks. SAT includes three main components: an attribute-based policy control model for highly dynamic communication environments, a proactive trust model to build trust among vehicles, and prevent the breakage of existing trust, and an email-based social network trust system to enhance trust and to allow the set up of a decentralized trust framework. To deploy SAT, we utilize identity-based cryptography to integrate entity trust, data trust, security policy enforcement, and social network trust, allocating a unique identity, and a set of attributes for each entity. We conclude by presenting research challenges and potential research directions that extend this work.
