    This paper proposes an indoor solar thermal cooker (STC) to cook various food items and to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels. An indoor STC is designed and fabricated for this purpose. The main theme of research is to increase the heat storage strength, even in the absence of solar irradiation. Charging time is decreased by using the solar thermal dish, and discharging time is increased by specific use of insulation. A non-magnetic stainless-steel fry pan is employed to avoid food items' flavor diversions. Research work is focused on characterizing the materials for cookers to enhance efficiency. Heat storage material therminole is used to make it more effective. Stainless steel sheets are rolled to keep STC systematically strong. These sheets are joined via Argon welding plant to stop heat leakage. Polyurethane, glass wool, and fiber cloth sheets are inserted for heat conservation. Experimentally, different food items are baked and boiled and elapsed time is measured.

    Water content in vegetable oils is one of the important parameters to be controlled during the extraction of oils. In this work, we investigate the efficiency of the dielectric spectroscopy for the detection of the water content in different vegetable oils. A capacitive sensor with a high effective surface and small distance between the electrodes is used in order to measure the dielectric constant of the oil. First the water content of edible oil was characterized by measurements corresponding to ISO 620. The dielectric constants of the oil samples change linearly with changes of water content for all oil samples. The measurement should be carried out at frequencies lower than 2 MHz.

  • Study of the dielectric properties of vegetable oils and their constituents

    This paper deals with the analysis of perspective and environmentally-friendly electrical insulating liquids for electrical engineering. In the experimental part, dielectric properties of the most common vegetable oils were analyzed and compared with those of their constituents converted from triglyceryl esters to methyl esters: soybean oil, sunflower oil, rapeseed oil, peanut oil, cottonseed oil on one side and methyl oleate and methyl laurate on the other side. Dielectric properties were measured using the high-resolution Novocontrol Alpha-A Frequency Analyzer in the frequency range 1 Hz-10 MHz in the temperature interval 243 K-363 K. The lowest value of dielectric constant of natural oil (2.50) was exhibited at 363 K by peanut oil. Methyl oleate, an oil component which is usually present in large quantities, exhibited the value of dielectric constant equal to 3.23.

  • AC Breakdown Characteristics of A Novel Three-Element Mixed Insulation Oil for Power Transformer

    Insulation oil is an indispensable part of the power transformer for the role in insulation and cooling. In order to find out a more ideal insulating liquid for power transformers, our team has developed a new type of three-element mixed insulation oil based on analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of mineral oil and vegetable oil. Most properties of this oil are superior to mineral oil, and more importantly, the oil has the ability of retarding the aging rate of insulation paper in oil-paper system. To promote its safety engineering application, this paper furtherly analyzes the alternating current (AC) breakdown characteristics of this oil. The AC breakdown voltages of the three-element mixed insulation oil with different moisture contents and temperatures were measured. Results show that the AC breakdown voltage of the three-element mixed insulation oil is much better than common mineral oil, especially at higher moisture content and temperature. The three-element mixed insulation oil has better AC breakdown property than common mineral oil.

  • Behavior of alternative electro insulating liquid at solidification process

    The most commonly used insulating liquid is mineral oil. Mineral oil is characterized by high flammability and poor biodegradability. On the other hand, this oil has very good electrical properties. For reasons of environmental protection is an effort to replace the mineral oil by alternative insulating liquids. The vegetable or synthetic oils may be used as an alternative insulating liquid. The rapeseed oil is a suitable replacement for mineral oil in terms of dielectric properties, environmental friendliness, and financial costs. The main objective of this paper is to analyze the influence of solidification of rapeseed oil on its dielectrics parameters by dielectric spectroscopy measurement. The main emphasis is placed on the area near the pour point. The comparison of the dielectric strength of rapeseed oil in the liquid state and in the solid state is also part of this research.

  • Ultrasonic assessment of olive oil mixtures properties

    Mainly produced in the Mediterranean countries, olive oil excels by its nutritional and medicinal benefits. However, olive oil available in the market is not always authentic. It can be altered by inadequate storage conditions or if it is mixed to other kinds of oils. The objective of this work is to use ultrasonic methods for a possible quick detection of olive oil adulteration from the characterization of its ultrasonic properties. In this context, ultrasonic longitudinal propagation velocity and attenuation were measured for pure olive oil and for its mixtures with soya oil at different proportions, at 20 °C and using a 5 MHz ultrasonic transducer. Then, the longitudinal viscosity of the different oil samples has been deduced on the whole bandwidth of the transducer (3-7 MHz) thanks to frequential analysis of the rough data. Thanks to the measurement of the shear viscosity with a Couette viscosimeter, we also deduced the bulk viscosity. Propagation velocity starts from 1458 m.s-1for pure olive oil and increases with percentage of soya oil in the mixture up to 1464 m.s-1. The corresponding longitudinal viscosity decreases with percentage of soya oil from 161.4 mPa.s, for pure olive oil, to 136.7 mPa.s, for pure Soya oil. As a function of frequency, longitudinal and bulk viscosities decrease, for all proportions of soya oil, indicating that ultrasonic relaxation may take place. Thanks to the high level of accuracy of the method proposed in this communication, the results show the ability of ultrasonic methods to be an efficient tool, which allows distinguishing mixtures of oils and thus detecting adulterated olive oil.

  • Study of dielectric permittivity and fatty acid composition for fats and oil in wide frequency spectroscopy measurement at 0.5–50 GHz

    The study focused on application of spectral permittivity technique subjected to wide frequency range of from microwaves to millimeter waves (i.e. 0.5-50 GHz) at the temperature of 60°C to understand the relationship of dielectric permittivity and fatty acid composition in fats and oil. Results showed that the dielectric constant of 4 animal fats and 2 vegetable oil exhibited same frequency dependence. The dielectric constant of fats and oil increases with an increase in the degree of unsaturation in vegetable oil at 7.4, 13.4, 18.3, 23.3, and 46.0 GHz. The dielectric constant decreases with the increase of composition of palmitic and oleic acid in animal fat at 13.4 and 18.3 GHz respectively. The understanding obtained in this work could be useful towards distinguishing fats and oils especially lard using rapid permittivity spectroscopy based on accurate chemical composition, suitable for Halal product analysis.

  • Deep convolutional neural network based large-scale oil palm tree detection for high-resolution remote sensing images

    This paper proposed a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) based framework for large-scale oil palm tree detection using high-resolution remote sensing images in Malaysia. Different from the previous palm tree or tree crown detection studies, the palm trees in our study area are very crowded and their crowns often overlap. Moreover, there are various land cover types in our study area, e.g. impervious, bare land, and other vegetation, etc. The main steps of our proposed method include large-scale and multi-class sample collection, AlexNet-based DCNN training and optimization, sliding window-based label prediction, and post-processing. Compared with the manually interpreted ground truth, our proposed method achieves detection accuracies of 92%-97% in our study area, which are greatly higher than the accuracies obtained from another two detection methods used in this paper.
