Information communication technology (ICT) has emerged as one the most significant industry sectors contributing to the United States' growth. E-commerce and Internet are the two most important developments not only in ICT but in the world of business as a whole. It allows many people to buy and exchange goods and services immediately with 24-hour availability. Also, by using the e-commerce, consumers can compare products and prices easily, and choose delivery options which have made shopping more enjoyable, less expensive and time consuming. E-commerce will be the fastest growing part in the U.S. retail marketplace for the foreseeable future. In this paper, we attempted to design and assess a sustainable networked delivery (SND) system for book delivery system to achieve significant reductions of energy consumption and environmental emissions of critical local pollutants and greenhouse gases due to growing local transportation in urban areas.
Based on the summaries in the research achievements related to Green Projects, the thesis emphatically analyses contents and key points in evaluating the green degree of the project from the Sustainable development perspective, all of which aims at the current situation and the solution to the implementation problems. On this basis, the thesis designs the evaluation system of the green project that is all-life-cycle, multi-level, and omnibearing. In order to better the level of the evaluation, this thesis changes the traditional qualitative analysis mode, then building a fuzzy comprehensive evaluation model of the green projects which is quantitative analysis. Finally, this thesis empirical researches a representative case to illuminate the application of the evaluation system in the domain of the quantitative evaluation about green degree, which verify the practicability of the system of target and estimate that is expatriated.
The development of an airborne remote sensing system at the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Engineering started in 1998, as support to postgraduate study. The system is intended for the airborne acquisition of data on urban traffic dynamic characteristics, for the acquisition of data on the bottleneck phenomenon in road traffic, for determining the status of vegetation and forests, and for sensing of mine polluted areas. The aircraft Cessna 172R is used as the platform for the gimbal on which more, mutually different sensors can be placed. The characteristics of the Sharp View Cam VL-H420S as the sensor are considered here. The static spatial resolution of the camcorder is determined by means of test bars. Further, the effects of platform disturbance and vibration on the aerial images are considered.
Assessing and understanding the level of city ecological security are of great importance to sustainable urban development. The result shows that the ecological security level of the city in 2003 belongs to critical security situation. The conclusion is the same to that of matter element model and reflects the real eco-environment state of Hefei city. Therefore, the model is feasible and accurate.
A new method for retrieving aerosol optical thickness (AOT) over land is presented. The method that is based on the contrast reduction analysis uses a variable window size in the calculations of the so-called structure function. The window size is automatically selected on a pixel-by-pixel basis through the use of a simple 'homogeneity' criterion. The proposed method that needs no a-priori information has been applied to both Landsat-TM and NOAA-AVHRR data. The retrieved AOT values show higher correlations in in situ chemical measurements compared to the classical approach that adopts a constant window size for the target areas.
The ballasts that control the operation of fluorescent lamps are known to generate peak currents and introduce harmonic currents into the distribution system. Magnetic or electronic ballasts are used with fluorescent lamps. A comparison was made concerning the extent of power pollution caused by these two technologies to the distribution system. Magnetic ballast and electronic ballast with dimmer were also compared for power pollution. Input power factor in each case was measured. Incandescent lamps with dimmers are also widely used for lighting control. Present day dimmers utilize a phase-control circuit with triac to vary the conducting period of each half cycle of lamp currents, thus reducing the light output. Input power factor, harmonics injected into the distribution system, and the efficiency of the dimmer were experimentally evaluated. The third harmonic current flowing in the neutral of the three- phase system was also measured.<<ETX>>
Haze is a weather phenomenon, which is very harmful to the environmental protection or the public health. Therefore, it is necessary to forecast upcoming haze weather so that the protective measures can be taken to minimize the haze's negative impact. A hybrid neural networks model is proposed in this paper for the forecast of the haze level, which consists of two individual neural networks - one is a standard neural network and another is a risk neural network. Experimental results show that the hybrid model is superior to both the standard neural network and the risk one, which provide a support for our work.
Highway runoff is one of the important water resources in urban areas, though severe pollution has curbed its direct use. In this study, a soil infiltration system is proposed for treatment of highway runoff. Bench-scale experiments with different inflow concentrations and system operation modes (continuous/intermittent) have been designed to simulate the highly varied inflow rate and pollution load conditions of highway runoff. The experiment results indicate that the system has a high treatment efficiency of 84%-94% for SS, 50% for TOC, 40%-80% for TN and 75%-95% for TP. Based on the experiment results, a full-scale installation was designed and constructed. Nearly one year's operation of the installation showed that the system performs well with high treatment efficiency and the effluent can be used for irrigation and road water spraying.
The insulators made from polymeric materials offer numerous advantages in out- door insulation systems due to their good dielectric properties, light weight, better pollution performance, low cost, quicker processing etc. However, they can be degraded by environmental stress like heat, moisture, contaminants and this could lead to tracking and surface discharges which ultimately cause flashover of the insulator. Tracking, which is mainly due to heat of electrical discharges across dry bands or in the presence of wet contaminant layer on the insulator surface, remains to be the most serious problem. Inorganic fillers are incorporated into the polymeric materials such as silicone rubber and ethylene propylene diene monomer EPDM to minimize the effects of tracking. The widely used fillers are silica and alumina trihydrate. Having this in view, in the present work, the behaviour of the tracking resistance of the blend of silicone and EPDM is discussed. The performance of insulators are identified by many means and it has been noticed earlier that the failure of out-door insulation structure is due to tracking. Hence in this present work, careful experimental studies were carried out based on IEC 587. It is well known that the material performance depends on the characteristics of the insulating material (ingredients). To obtain a complete database, studies were carried out with different percentage of silica fillers viz. 10%, 20% 30%, 40% & 50% in the polymeric combination which consists of silicone and EPDM in 50:50 weight percentage compositions.
