  • Design and test of power supply system for ATLAS muon spectrometer

    In this paper, the problem of the Low Voltage (LV) and High Voltage (HV) power supply distribution of the MDT (Monitored Drift Tubes) detector is addressed. Due to the high number of channels (1168 for low voltage and twice for high voltage) involved and to the dimension of the apparatus, these power supply systems are very complicated. Both system are made of three different parts: a power generator, a system controller and an active distributor. The first two parts will be localized in the cavern close to the experimental area, so they are subjected to standard environmental conditions. The third part (the active distributor) will be placed in the experimental area on the platforms just outside the detector, where the environmental conditions are more severe, due to the presence of magnetic field (about 800 Gauss) and radiations. In the following we present the design specifications and tests for the power supply systems.

The effects of sampling rate, the number of measurements and system frequency fluctuation on the estimated value of loss factor are discussed.

  • Remotely Controlled Jetting Burier for Submarine Cable (MARCAS-200 Crawler)

    It has been using plow type buriers to bury submarine cables laid on continental shelves for avoiding damages from fishing gears and ship's anchors. A plow type burier, however, is not suitable for burying repaired cables left on bottom surface in cable burying section. For purposes of burying such portion of cables, we have developed the remotely controlled jetting burier, named "MARCAS-200 CRAWLER", which moves with the hydraulic driving crawlers and is equipped with water jet nozzles at the tip of the manipulator. The burier is capable of operating up to 200 meters deep and the trenching depth is 2 meters in maximum depending on the sea bottom conditions. The burier traces the cable by detecting a low frequency signal applied on the cable. In this paper, we describe the outline of features and performance of the burier.

  • A virtual instrument for measurement of flicker

    All types of fluctuations of the r.m.s. voltage in power systems may be assessed by using a flickermeter which complies with the specification given in IEC-EN 60868. In this paper a digital flickermeter is presented based on the implementation in the frequency domain of the weighting filter block of the eye-brain simulation chain. The virtual instrument, implemented with an acquisition board inserted on a PC and with a software developed with the LabView tools, samples the voltage and furnishes the instantaneous flicker level and other severity coefficients. Results of simulated and actual data are reported to validate the performances of the developed flickermeter.

  • Model and Experimental Study of Permanent Magnet Vibration-to-Electrical Power Generator

    The vibration energy exists widely and is always wasted. Energy harvesting devices that convert kinetic energy into electrical energy have attracted much interest. A variety of vibration driven generators using electromagnetic principles to convert the kinetic energy into electrical energy, are being studied for powering sensors. However, the power supply is always a bottleneck problem to the development of handheld electronic equipments and some other low power electrical apparatus. In this paper, the vibration-to-electrical power generator has been designed and its magnetic field distribution has been analyzed by using Finite Element method (FEM). Then, the input-output model of the generator is built on the basis of vibration equation and law of electromagnetic induction. The calculation result has shown that output voltage of the generator depends on the amplitude, frequency and waveform of a vibration source. A generator prototype has been fabricated and tested at open-circuit and different loads, such as resistances, inductances and capacitances. The comparison of experimental result with calculating one has shown that the model can describe the input-output relation of the vibration- to-electrical power generator.
