    Three geometries for a UHF streamflow radar system are examined: bistatic across the channel, monostatic on a bank, and monostatic in the center of the channel. The radar operates by analyzing the frequency spectrum of the received energy and determining the angles of arrival of energy at each frequency, so it is important to understand how the various geometries affect the width of the frequency spectrum and its angular distribution. We argue that placing the radar and antenna on one bank, with the antennas looking broadly across the river, generally produces the best results. The broad frequency spectrum allows many points to be analyzed, most of which have single-angle direction solutions (which generally are more robust than dual- angle solutions), and all the equipment can be placed at a single location.

  • Wireless channel modeling using a miniaturized city and MM-wave transceivers

    A scaled propagation measurement system (SPMS) is developed as an alternative to the time consuming and expensive measurements for wireless channel characterization. This system allows accurate measurements of well-defined channels in a laboratory environment. Confining the desired range of frequency to systems operating at UHF to L-Band (0.5-2 GHz), dimensions of the scatterers and terrain features can be reduced by a factor of 50-200 for the SPMS that operates at around 100 GHz. The system includes a probe positioner, scaled model of city, miniaturized millimeter wave transceivers probes, and a network analyzer. SPMS is capable of measuring path loss as well as power delay profile (PDP) for any desired environment. It can be used to verify available channel models or collect data for developing new models. The system has a dynamic range around 85 dB and a nominal spurious level of -40 dBc.

  • Single stub tuning application via semi-rigid coaxial cables for VHF and UHF monopole antennas on RASAT

    For maximum power transfer impedance matching is an important subject in communication systems. Besides, minimum complexity is another important concept in order to obtain cheaper, reliable and feasible matching networks. In this study, a single stub matching implementation applied while improving the return loss characteristic of blade antennas used in VHF/UHF communication system of RASAT is presented. RASAT will be the first observation satellite designed and manufactured in Turkey.

  • Generation of UHF band aerial noise in HV substation and its invasion properties into GIS

    This paper describes the GHz order electromagnetic (EM) wave generator we have developed that simulates UHF band aerial noise occasionally measured in HV substation. Using this generator and the model GIS, we investigated the invasion properties of such UHF band aerial noise into the model GIS by changing the location of the generator, i.e. partial discharge (PD) source. As a result, PD-induced EM wave generated outside GIS can invade into GIS inside with GHz order frequency component if PDs were generated near the GIS components worked as an aperture for EM wave.

  • UHF characteristic of PD in oil-paper insulation under DC Voltage

    A test system with UHF and UWB detection technologies developed to measure PD under DC voltage is introduced in this paper. According to the typical defects in oil-paper insulation of converter transformer, six corresponding PD models are designed. The test results of PD UWB detection under DC voltage show that the PD current pulses have a very short rise-time, which are capable of radiating UHF signals at frequencies up to at least 300 MHz, and these electrical magnetic waves can be picked up by the UHF sensor. The DBM spectrum analysis is made for all UHF signals of the models, which shows that they differ with various defects, and the maximum amplitudes of the energy distribution against the UHF are also different. These indicate the on-line monitoring for the UHF PD signal under DC voltage should be realized utilizing the narrowband filter with adaptive center frequency.

  • Development of a novel tapered balun for the UWB UHF coupler

    The UWB UHF coupler for GIS PD detection requires a balun (balance to unbalance transformer) to show its inherent UWB characteristics. In order to reduce the size of the balun and to make it practical in the conventional GIS, a novel tapered coaxial balun with a dielectric was proposed for the UWB UHF coupler. The performance of the proposed balun was verified through a series of simulations, measurements and experiments. As a result, both the conventional balun and the proposed balun, which has a length equal to one third of that of the conventional balun, demonstrated good S11 characteristics, whereas the efficiency of the proposed balun increased as much as about 30% in comparison to the conventional one.
