  • Competitiveness and TQM: is the synergy really a surprise?

    Summary form only given. Media reports about today's successful enterprises increasingly scoop out one key factor-the proximity of these companies' management practices to total quality management (TQM), a distinct socially transmitted pattern of behaviour. This paper examines what makes TQM so different, its dividends, and why a company-wide obsession focused on satisfying customers, internal and external, leads a company to a stronger competitive position. Four essentials characterize TQM, as follows: top management's direct involvement in the delivery of quality; an uncompromising customer orientation; company-wide participation in the attainment of customer satisfaction; and the use of systematic methods used in resolving quality problems. TQM requires nonstop effort to eliminate tasks and processes that are nonvalue adding as far as the customer is concerned. Such savings are the "bottomline" benefits of TQM that the business can enjoy-even if there is no competition. But then, if whatever we produce must satisfy the internal and external customers and we produce nothing else, then we produce no waste, rework or redress. Then we do not have to raise prices to recover the cost of such waste from the customer, the goodwill we build here being the added edge in the marketplace. This strengthens the company's competitive stance, underscoring the synergy between TQM and competitiveness.

  • Pragmatism, adaptation, and total quality management: philosophy and science in the service of managing continuous improvement

    Today's engineering managers who use total quality management (TQM) face the challenge of moving it from adoption to seamless incorporation into their organizations. Both the application and the theory of TQM can be advanced through an examination of the philosophy of pragmatism and the sciences of adaptation. Pragmatism provides a philosophy that establishes a theory for incorporating TQM into engineers' management practice; it derives its epistemology from actual experience. In essence, pragmatism suggests that practical experience, such as that gained from the continuous improvement of and experimentation with TQM, provides the basis for successful organizational performance. The sciences of adaptation identify the characteristics of organizations that promote successful adaptation. They suggest that incremental adjustments to ongoing change are keys to effective and successful growth. This paper explores both philosophy and science to identify actions and attitudes that can enable the success of TQM in an organization.

  • System engineering-the basis for management of engineering and technology

    The newly formed National Council on System Engineering (NCOSE) is attempting to improve the practice of system engineering and stimulate the education and training of qualified individuals who can enter this practice. The author summarizes the history and fundamentals of system engineering that have been discussed by the NCOSE membership. The basic paradigm of system engineering-(1) to define functions (F) to be performed, (2) to specify measurable and testable requirements (R) describing how well each function must be performed, and (3) to conduct tradeoff studies among possible alternative solutions (A)-is a formalized method of common problem solving. Most popular management techniques are variations of this basic three-step process. It is concluded that understanding the application of these basic three Steps (F-R-A) is essential to evaluating alternative management processes for use in technical program management.<<ETX>>

  • Integration, learning and continuous improvement in the product development process: a core competence reference model and exploration study in Brazilian companies

    Summary form only given as follows. This paper presents the results of an ongoing study about the relationship between integration, continuous improvement and learning in the product development process. The study was conducted in four Brazilian companies from the automotive industry. The variables were analyzed by a matrix to compare them with the managerial practices and show the intensity of this relationship qualitatively and subjectively. The initial results show that integration, learning and continuous improvements are not routinely used by managers. However, some aspects of these three factors are adopted: required standards, approaches that were identified by benchmarking in other companies and techniques applied by a TQM program. A model is proposed that allows the identification and management of core competencies in the product development process.

  • Benchmarking, multi-criteria evaluation model, and ISO 9000 certification

The necessary criteria are determined using a benchmarking tool, which is one of the most useful tools of total quality management (TQM). Total quality management (TQM) plays an important role in helping American companies to regain their technological power. ISO 9000 registration is a must for many companies that are suppliers of products, parts and materials. It can mean prestige, consistency, high quality, less waste and higher profits to the organization. The registration process could be very long, e.g. from 5 months to 3 years, and expensive. The benchmarking process is recommended to establish the criteria necessary for the registration procedure. The Bipolar method, which provides ranking and sorting objects (agencies), is recommended in order to achieve success and avoid failure.
