  • Sentinel-1 Mission Analysis

Mission Analysis for an Earth Observation satellite system is the process defining high-level mission/system requirements and subsequent system design based on user needs and mission objectives. Mission analysis is a necessary tool to interpret the mission/system requirements and to ensure their implementation during the overall system engineering process related to space, ground and operations segments. An overview of the GMES Sentinel-1 mission analysis is reported in this paper, which focuses on the main features characterising the C-band SAR satellite system. The following topics are discussed in some detail, in order to show the relationships between mission/system requirements and the system engineering implications: - Orbital control - Operational scenarios - Data volume and system latency

  • Suggestions for electrical research in engineering colleges

The primary object of the paper is to present a list of topics in electrical engineering suitable for thesis, research, and advanced study. A plea is made for systematic research, each college specializing year after year in only a few topics for advanced investigation. The author suggests that the Educational Committee of the Institute become a central place for information and a stimulus in applied electrical research, cooperating with engineering colleges and with individual inventors and investigators. Various types of investigations are enumerated, such as invention, experimental study, theoretical study, library search, and compilation of data. Some advice is given the young investigator as to how to proceed in the most efficient way and to avoid a disappointment.

  • Complete and exact identification of self-sustained oscillations in relay sampled-data systems

A simple and systematic approach is presented to obtain the complete, exact, and exhaustive description of limit cycles that may exist in a relay sampled- data control system. The final expression in its closed form is obtained by simple substitution. There is no restriction on the order of the plant, nor does the feedback have to be unity. The period of the oscillation poses no problem in the approach presented. Clear and explicit relations between the self-sustained oscillations and system parameters have been established.
