This paper studies the self-excitation characteristics of generators in isolated hydropower group. The emphasis is placed on the great influence on self-excitation boundary conditions and transient process by the characteristics of high-frequency and over-voltage of the isolated hydropower group. To avoid self-excitation, two practical criterions are derived respectively in the form of impedance and capacity. Furthermore, simulation of the self-excitation transient process is carried out in an isolated hydropower group in Sichuan Power Grid. The results validate the conclusions of the research.

  • Robust Frequency Control of Microgrids Using an Extended Virtual Synchronous Generator

    Integration of inverter-interfaced distributed generators (DGs) via microgrids into traditional power systems reduces the total inertia and damping properties, while increasing uncertainty and sensitivity to the fault in the system. The concept of the virtual synchronous generator (VSG) has been recently introduced in the literature as a solution, which mimics the behavior of conventional synchronous generators in large power systems. Parameters of the VSGs are normally determined comparing the conventional synchronous generators. This paper introduces an extended VSG for microgrids by combining the concept of virtual rotor, virtual primary, and virtual secondary control as a virtual controller to stabilize/regulate the system frequency. An H∞robust control method is proposed for robust\optimal tuning of the virtual parameters. The effectiveness of the proposed control methodology is verified via a microgrid test bench.

  • Effect of excitation systems and of power system stabilisers on synchronous generator damping and synchronising torques

    The synchronising and damping torque coefficients in the range of the electromechanical oscillation frequencies provide a measure of the generators' contribution towards power system stability under small deviations, and may be taken as stability indices even for multimachine systems, although their interpretation is rather complex in this case. The author presents the development of an expression to calculate the electromagnetic torque for small deviations around an operating point, as produced by a synchronous generator connected to an infinite busbar through an impedance; he explicitly includes the effects of its automatic voltage regulator (AVR) and of the additional stabiliser signal derived from the rotor speed.<<ETX>>

  • Synchronous generator incipient fault prediction based on SVM

    Aiming at the lack of technology for generator incipient condition monitoring and fault prediction, proposed SVM(Support Vector Machine) is introduced to generator incipient fault prediction. This paper takes the parametric faults of synchronous generator as an example, selects the output voltage as a monitoring signal, and combines with SVM regression prediction algorithms to achieve synchronous generators incipient fault prediction.
