The author describes the capabilities of high-temperature superconducting thin films (HTSTF) for possible application in microwave integrated delay lines. HTSTF can be characterized as thin-film microstrip (TFMS) lines operating at superconducting temperatures. Low insertion loss, minimum signal delay, and small power dissipation are possible with HTSTF delay lines. The conductor loss, dielectric loss, signal distortion, signal delay, and instantaneous bandwidth are dependent on the film thickness, superconducting film material, and substrate properties. Thin films on yttrium barium copper oxide (YBCO), bismuth strontium calcium copper oxide (BSCCO), and thalium calcium barium copper oxide (TCBCO) appear to be the most suitable for microwave integrated delay lines.<<ETX>>
One way to construct a leaky-wave antenna is to place a simple source (such as a dipole) between a ground plane and a highly reflective surface. Examples of reflective surfaces that have been used in the past include one or more dielectric layers of high permittivity, a metal strip grating, and a thin film of superconducting material. In this paper, a leaky-wave antenna using a reflective surface made from a two-dimensional periodic array of metal patches is studied.
The laser ablation method is suitable for the formation of metal oxide thin films, such as dielectric materials and high T/sub c/ superconductors. This is because the laser beam comes from outside the film formation chamber and therefore oxygen pressure can be chosen as a desired value for the growth of thin films. The author prepares PbTiO/sub 3/ thin films, SrTiO/sub 3/-BaTiO/sub 3/ dielectric strained superlattices, BaCaCuO superconducting thin films and AuBaCuO superconducting superlattices.
