  • Computer Control of White Sugar Refining Process

    Control of the white sugar vacuum pan has proven to be an ideal application for process control computers. The computer is well suited to perform this function because of the batch nature of the process, and has been used to augment a complete analog control system. Each strike requires detailed sequencing and precise monitoring of process variables in order to maintain product quality while increasing plant efficiency. For pans equipped with mechanical circulators, an additional improvement results when the current load of the circulator motor is used as the measure of consistency. Further, the computer is able to duplicate the control sequencing on multiple units through the use of separate setpoint arrays, determined for each particular pan and type of strike being boiled. The primary improvement is the reduction of time per strike, leading directly to increased output. The computer also helps to minimize downtime by constantly monitoring alarm conditions and taking corrective action when necessary to avoid emergency situations such as solidifying the massecuite in the pan. Preliminary results have shown an immediate increase in refinery production as a result of installation of the process control computer.

    Dental erosion has been growing increasingly prevalent with the rise in consumption of heavy starches, sugars, coffee, and acidic beverages. In addition, various disorders, such as gastroenterological reflux disease (GERD), have symptoms of rapid rates of tooth erosion. The measurement of enamel thickness would be important for dentists to assess the progression of enamel loss from all forms of erosion, attrition, and abrasion. Characterizing enamel loss is currently done with various subjective indexes that can be interpreted in different ways by different dentists. Ultrasound has been utilized since the 1960's to determine internal tooth structure, but with mixed results. Via image processing and enhancement, we were able to refine B-mode dental ultrasound images for more accurate enamel thickness measurements. The mean difference between the measured thickness of the occlusal enamel from ultrasound images and corresponding gold standard CT images improved from 0.55 mm to 0.32 mm with image processing (p = 0.033). The difference also improved from 0.62 to 0.53 mm at the buccal/lingual enamel surfaces, but not significantly (p = 0.38).

  • Optimal coordination of crystallization batch processes using rules and practices of extreme programming

    This contribution describes the development and implementation of a complex control system for a sugar production plant. Using practices of extreme programming control algorithms have been generated to realize an optimal coordination of twenty batch crystallizers. Thus the equilibrium of mass and energy flows as well as the improvement of sugar quality parameters could be achieved. The developed batch control is working on the level of process coordination, acting directly on the level of process control. All algorithms are implemented in Matlab/Simulink and handle about 300 binary and continuous I/O-signals in real time connection. Therefore a client server structure is established between Matlab and the process control system.

  • A Novel Screening Method of Dextran Binding Antibody Using Phage Display Libraries

    Sephadextrade bead agarose electrophoresis (SBAE) was used to enrich the higher dextran binding phages. Phage collection obtained after the 2<sup>nd</sup> round of SBAE was 3.5 fold higher color intensity than that of phage collections obtained after the 1<sup>st</sup> round. DNA sequencing of phage collection (SBAE-2R) confirmed that human origin antibody was present. The PCR products of lambda, k light chains and heavy chain from phage collection (SBAE-2R) were approximately 420 bp, 550 bp and 600 bp.

  • The Start-Up and Operational Performance of Anaerobic Baffled Reactor (ABR) Treating High-Concentration Sugar-Producing Wastewater

    A four-compartment ABR with an effective volume of 28 L was used to investigate the application of an anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) in treating sugar-producing wastewater. The results indicated that the reactor could start up at an influent OLR of 2.5 kgCOD/m<sup>3</sup>-d and temperature of 35degC. COD removal rate could reach 89% on the 5<sup>th</sup> day. Then the influent COD increased from 5000 to 8000 mg/L, HRT decreased from 48 to 36 h, and OLR increased to 5.3 kgCOD/m<sup>3</sup>-d on the 9<sup>th</sup> day. The reactor performed steadily from the 28<sup>th</sup> day, with an average COD removal rate of 85.5%. The total volatile acids in the four compartments declined gradually, with acetic acid in the greatest proportion, followed by propionic acid and then valeric acid.

  • The transition to an innovation-driven industrial economic development policy: the road ahead for Puerto Rico

    The Puerto Rico industrial economic development policy has been dominated by manufacturing multinationals that performed their product development outside the island. With the curtailment by Congress of special tax incentives to enterprises operating on the island, Puerto Rico must find ways to transform its manufacturing industry from a consumer of imported intellectual property, to a locally generated, innovation-driven industry. This paper looks into the different alternative strategies that may be attempted, discusses some of the factors that should be taken into consideration, and outlines several alternatives that have been developed by the University of Puerto Rico. Some of these initiatives include the creation of the technology incubator ViTeC, and the formation of institutes that spawn faculty-corporations such as the Innovation Development Assistance Institute (IDeAi), the Informatics and Telecommunications Development Institute (ITDI), the Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing and Education, and the Waste Conversion Institute (WCI).

  • Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) Simulation Model and Influence of Operational Parameters on Hydrogen Bio-Production through Integrative Biological Reactor (IBR) Treating Wastewater

    The bio-hydrogen producing process has complex interactions; thus, constructing a detailed mechanistic model and proper control architecture is difficult. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are capable of inferring the complex relationships between input and output process variables without a detailed characterization of the mechanisms governing the process. This work presented a novel ANN that accurately predicts the steady-state performance of bioreactors for the bio-hydrogen producing processes. In this experiment, producing hydrogen from sugar refinery wastewater was studied in the integrative biological reactor (IBR). And a simulation model of operational parameters was also established based on theory of back propagation neural network (BPNN). The effects of operational parameters on bio-hydrogen production bioreactors were considered. The results showed that simulation model well fitted the laboratory data, and could well simulate the production of hydrogen in the reactor. Also it showed that volume loading rate (VLR), pH, oxidation reduction potential (ORP) and alkalinity could influence the fermentation characteristics and hydrogen yield of the anaerobic activated sludge. And the weight of the influence factors was as followed: VLR&gt; alkalinity &gt; pH values&gt; ORP in the IBR.
