"El Furrial" 400/115 kV substation project extension includes the implementation of a control logic which will allow an automatic autotransformer spare unit changeover in a three single-phase autotransformer bank 400/230/34.5 kV, 450 MVA. In order to develop an automatic control logic for the spare unit changeover in a three single-phase autotransformer bank, CVG EDELCA has made modifications to the control and protection principles in the "El Furrial" 400/115 kV substation. Through the control logic for a spare unit changeover in a single phase autotransformer bank at "El Furrial" substation, it is foreseen to maintain periodically in operation the four autotransformers units and to obtain a time reduction in maintenance issues and it will improve the flexibility of the electrical system as well as increase quality of service to one of the most important clients in Venezuela, the oil industry
The paper discusses the effect of short circuit fault on sensitive loads and methods for reducing the duration of voltage sags, swells or interruptions by improving existing protection methods or adding advanced protection schemes. Requirements for the recording of power quality events in order to understand their effects on the manufacturing process are presented. Combining multiple overcurrent elements in a complex overcurrent characteristic, using negative sequence overcurrent protection, distribution bus and breaker failure protection, fuse saving or selective backup tripping schemes are described.
Modern distance protection relays are complex multifunctional devices based on classical or advanced operating principles that impose special requirements for their testing. The paper analyzes the functionality, the functional hierarchy and the schemes typically available in distance relays. It then discusses the methodology for testing of such relays. Testing of individual protection and non-protection elements, complex protection functions and communications based transmission line protection schemes is described in detail.
Proper rating and placing of surge arresters in HV substations is vital for safe protection of the equipment and high availability of the entire power transmission system. However, a substation is a complex system for steep surges, and for many configurations it cannot be said easily whether all parts of the substation are protected sufficiently by the surge arresters installed or not. Computer simulation of lightning surges and their magnitudes inside a substation can help determining the risk of damages of equipment by lightning overvoltages and supports optimized placing and rating of surge arresters. This paper describes typical problems out of the daily practice. It shows the complexity of insulation co-ordination problems with the need for an individual consideration of each substation. Computer based simulations can show the maximum overvoltage stresses at different locations of a substation for different switching conditions and surge arresters provided already in the planning stage. Representative modeling of transient overvoltages will be shown as well as the general way how to carry out such studies. Main input parameters and influencing factors will be discussed showing possible variations to design the transmission system which would reduce overvoltage stresses. Considering the statistical nature of lightning surges helps to define the failure risk at reasonable amount and optimization of the protection devices necessary.
The goal of this work is to present a developed adequate model that will allow analyzing, dimensioning and control of auxiliary DC installations in power plants, first of all from the protection device point of view. This paper deals with risk of power system blackout caused by auxiliary DC installation failure. In the past, failure of auxiliary DC installation has been caused by wrong selectivity of protection devices. However correct selectivity calculation is based on short-circuit current calculation. For this reasons it has to be made a general mathematical model of auxiliary DC installations in power plants and substations that correspond with laboratory results of short- circuit current test. It was concluded that the transient state during short circuit has to be taken into account and mathematical model of auxiliary DC installations in power plants and substations should include not only resistances, but inductances and capacities of auxiliary DC elements as well as the active network in front of the rectifier. The essence of this work is to suggest changing of present IEC standard 61660 - "short circuit currents in DC auxiliary installations in power plants and substations" that does not correspond with present technology used in auxiliary DC installations. Based on that hypothesis an original program package was developed and used for analyzing and dimensioning auxiliary DC installations in power system. The results obtained by means of the program package are relevant for dimensioning all elements of auxiliary DC installations, particularly when protection devices are considered.
The theory of ADS (Autonomous Decentralized system) has been applied in an automatic system of traction substation. Because of its characteristics of autonomy and decentralization, the control unit and the protection unit must be designed to run in the same environment of both hardware and software and CAN bus must also be taken as communication network. The division of data field is based on the mutuality of facilities. All the units except the local management unit and the communication unit, can be reconfigured so function of these units can be altered easily. The local management unit configures new units when the system is to be expanded. Three communication mode, point-to- point, multicast, broadcast communication mode is used.
This paper presents the study of the behavior of the system used to feed the warning lights of the 400 kV overhead lines towers that cross the Orinoco River. The feeding of this system is through an isolated ground wire in the section of the crossing. An analysis of the performance of the Balizaje substation is presented from the point of view of their behavior when switching overvoltages appears, with the purpose of evaluating quantitatively some conditions that could be risky for the integrity of the equipment and to obtain data for the adjustment of the substation protection system. This study was made by means of the electromagnetic transient program ATP and it is demonstrated that the Balizaje substation allows to control and to stabilize the voltage levels, guaranteeing the normal operation of the system during different fault and switching scenarios that could appear in the electrical system
