Undersea corrosion protection for aluminum structures

This paper discusses a method of protecting aluminum alloy structure and instrument housings against corrosion. The abrasion-resisting qualities of hardcoat anodize are considered and the advantages of sealing the hardcoat with paint are stated. It is concluded that a hardcoat/paint combination offers a good temporary protection.

  • Study on the inherent characteristics of planetary gear transmissions

    This article describes a novel modeling method for a rigid-flexible coupled planetary gear transmission system, which consists of rigid and elastic ring gear subsystems. The rigid gear subsystem model was established using the lumped parameter method while the elastic ring gear subsystem was established using the finite element method. According to the compatible state of deformation between mesh force and ring gear deformation, the natural frequency and vibration modes were determined, and the distribution rules of the natural frequency for this coupled system were established. The vibration modes were classified into six different modes based on the vibration characteristics of the system. This article provides a theoretical basis for the dynamic design of a rigid-flexible coupled planetary gear transmission system.

    In this paper, split ring unit cells are proposed and designed for ultra- wideband RCS reduction. The split ring unit cell converts the incidence wave to its cross-polarization in wide bandwidth, and most importantly, the cross- polarized reflection phase and amplitude can be separately controlled by the cell geometry and rotation angle. Based on the diffuse reflection theory, reflection phase of the proposed split ring unit cells are tailored to form a ultrawide band RCS reduction metasurface. The designed metasurface demonstrate RCS reduction of 10 dB in the range of 8.75 GHz-24.7 GHz.

The author discusses the causes of the Challenger disaster and possible causes of the Columbia disaster. The steps that led to the Columbia disaster-paved, like the road to hell, with good intentions and judgments that each in isolation look acceptable-are still being worked out. Only then will we be able to determine whether this event deserves to be called an accident of unforeseeable and unpreventable surprises-or is the grim consequence of incompetent engineering management.

    The history of the flawed joint that caused the NASA Challenger space shuttle disaster is examined, showing the sequence of events that led to its development and certification. Then the Challenger launch itself is described, and a number of questions are raised. The lessons to be learned from the accident are discussed.

  • High Holding Voltage SCR-LDMOS Stacking Structure With Ring-Resistance-Triggered Technique

    A novel ring-resistance-triggered stacked SCR-laterally diffused MOSs has been successfully verified in a 0.35 μm, 30-V/5-V bipolar CMOS DMOS process to solve the coupling of trigger voltage and holding voltage in stacking structures. The holding voltage of the proposed structure can be modulated by varying stacking numbers, and a high holding voltage of 22 V has been achieved using six stacks. On the other side, the trigger voltage almost keeps constant at ~ 53 V and a high failure current of 3.5 A has been achieved.

  • A 16-bit chipless RFID tag with quasi-complementary structure

    In this paper, a 16-bit chipless RFID tag is presented with dimension 24×24 mm2and operates at 1.95 GHz-7.15 GHz. The chipless RFID tag consists of the square rings arranged on the upper and lower layers of the dielectric substrate to form the quasi-complementary structure. Each square ring with different length corresponds to different resonance frequency points. The quasi-complementary structure is used to double the number of bits with the same frequency bandwidth. The proposed chipless tag has higher data capacity and lower cost compared with existing printable chipless tags.
