  • Influences of structural parameters variation on static behavior of suspension footbridge

    Based on the finite element theory, taking a suspension footbridge for example, it is used the finite element analysis software called MIDAS/Civil builded bridge element model to carry out the static analysis, to research the influences of different sag-to-span ratio and the constrained way between the cable and the tower on static behavior of suspension. The results showed that, the cable stress increase gradually with the decreasing of the sag-to-span ratio. Under the mid-span concentrated load, as the decreasing of the sag-to- span ratio, the deflection value of the mid-span point is reduced gradually. It has a very small influence on the cable stress and stiffening girder deflection when changing the constrained conditions. It shows that the results in this paper can be used in structural analysis for long-span suspension bridges of the same kind.

  • Rapid Beam Replacement of Chongqing Monorail: Emergency Beam, Process, and Technologies

    Chongqing monorail line 2 , the first straddle monorail transit in China, was opened to public in 2005. Most of the track beams in the monorail system are prestressed concrete (PC) beams. Because of its complicated alignment and long construction time, once a PC beam is destroyed, the whole line will be out of operation for a long time. To respond to the potential threats on PC beam, a research project was conducted to solve the problem of rapid beam replacement. To achieve the research objectives, the research team first introduced a new type of prefabricated emergency beam, which can be temporarily used to shorten the idling time of the monorail system. Then the research team developed the process of rapid beam replacement for PC beam accident. Next, two key technologies, emergency beam assembling and installation, were studied so that the rescue works would be carried out successfully. This research work could ultimately enhance the capability of rapid beam replacement after extreme events.

  • Nonlinear dynamic responses of long-span suspension bridge with the action of both running train and cross wind

    A framework for performing dynamic responses of long-span suspension bridge under the action of both running train and cross wind is presented, while taking the geometric nonlinearities of structure into account. The nonlinear dynamic equations of the coupled train-bridge-wind system are established, and solved with the Newmark numerical integration and direct interactive method, a corresponding computer code is written, too. The proposed framework is then applied to a schemed suspension bridge with the main span of 1120 m. The time histories of the bridge responses are simulated, when the train passing through with wind acting on both train and bridge. The results demonstrate that the geometric nonlinearities' effect is obviously. Both train-speed and wind velocity have great influence on the maximum deflection of the bridge.

  • Development of a new installation method along bridge for a 275 kV HPOF cable

    A novel method was developed for installing a 275 kV high-pressure oil-filled (HPOF) cable along the 100 m long Yotsugibashi Bridge (Japan). Because of the length of the bridge there was not enough space to absorb the thermal expansion of the steel pipes. A splice and expansion joint were developed which could absorb the thermal expansion of pipes and the relative movement of the internal cable core. The system also permits an exchange of gasket in the event of an oil leak, without decreasing the oil pressure. The splice and joint are described, and test results are reported. Installation has shown the method to be practically applicable.<<ETX>>

  • Decision Support System of Bridge Risk Based on CBR

    According to the basic principle of case-based reasoning (CBR), the bridge risk decision support system was presented in this research. Firstly, the various risk factors in every stage of the bridge construction were analyzed in a multi-level way. Specially, the ones in the operation stage were decomposed in detail. Consequently, the operation process of the bridge risk decision support system was introduced in a general way, and the method of case representation, case retrieval and case preservation were elaborated in detail. Finally, an example was given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The result shows that, as one of the new reasoning methods of artificial intelligence, The techniques of CBR can provide the reference for the bridge risk decision research.

  • A simplified method of analyzing the transverse vibration of railway bridges

    Transverse vibrations of bridges stirred by train affect the bridge's safety and comfort of the train. For simply supported beam, the paper deduces the response of the beam under a fixed harmonic load, uniform constant load or uniform moving harmonic load. The conclusion is that the response of the beam under uniform moving harmonic load is only about half of the response under a fixed harmonic load, which makes it reasonable that the train translates into a fixed harmonic load. Then a simplified analysis method of the bridge's vibration is obtained. The Example shows the feasibility of this simplified analysis.

  • Bridge Reliability Analysis Based on the FEM and Monte-Carlo Method

    The paper combines finite Element Method and Fatigue Cumulative Damage Theory to make finite element analysis of repeated stress caused by random vehicle dynamic loading effect on concrete girder bridge as well as the cumulative fatigue damage. Besides, the paper also uses finite element software to analyze the dynamic fatigue reliability of existing road bridges from the perspective of random structural fatigue resisting force.
