Higher-order modes for broadside-coupled striplines in a shield

A mode-matching method is applied to broadside-coupled striplines in a shield to obtain a dispersion relation. Higher-order mode analyses are performed, and their cutoff frequencies are evaluated. Good agreement with existing solutions is demonstrated. Higher-order field characteristics are illustrated. The mode- matching model provides an efficient and stable means of analyzing broadside- coupled striplines in a shield.

Experimental results on periodic coplanar Schottky-contact transmission lines on semiconducting GaAs, prepared by proton implantation, are presented. It is shown, that this technique reduces the propagation constant and increases the characteristic impedance, whereas the phase velocity further depends on the applied bias voltage. An additional significant result is the simultaneous increase in the quality factor.<<ETX>>

  • Frequency dependent transmission characteristics of microstrip lines on the finite width substrate or near a substrate edge

    An accurate hybrid mode analysis of microstrip lines on the finite width substrate or near a substrate edge including finite metallisation thickness is described. The frequency dependent solutions for the transmission characteristics of the microstrip lines are presented. An approach for avoiding the calculation of higher modes in a rectangular waveguide partially filled with a dielectric is also introduced. The results provide useful information for the design of high packing density millimetre wave MMICs.<<ETX>>

  • Proposed ultrahigh frequency microstrip utilising buried silicide groundplane

    Recently it has become possible to produce buried single-crystal silicide layers in silicon on which epitaxial silicon may be grown. The authors show that if such a layer is used as a groundplane in a microstrip configuration, ultra-high-speed signals (e.g. 100 GHz) can be propagated with far less dispersion than on standard microstrip, by virtue of the close proximity of the groundplane to the centre conductor.<<ETX>>

  • Asymmetric coplanar-strip transmission lines for MMIC and integrated optic applications

    Microwave transmission lines with coplanar electrodes on dielectric or semiconductor substrates are widely used in integrated optic travelling-wave modulators and optical control microwave attenuators/modulators. The reduction of the drive voltage in travelling-wave modulators and control power in optical control microwave attenuators is achieved by reducing the width of the gap between the coplanar strips. When reducing the gap width in these devices special care must be taken to keep the characteristic impedance, Z/sub 0/, high. Although symmetric coplanar and coplanar-strip waveguides, have been used, asymmetric coplanar-strip waveguides seem to be highly flexible in practical device design. Along with small sizes, the impedance, Z/sub 0/, effective dielectric constant, in /sub e/, and microwave refractive index, n/sub m/, can be adjusted by changing the width of one of the strips while keeping the width of the other strip and of the gap fixed. The basic parameters ( in /sub e/,C,Z/sub 0/) of asymmetric coplanar-strip waveguides on finite thickness substrate are reported.<<ETX>>

It is concerned with lines of equal widths with losses independent of frequency. Measurements of the step response in the tens of picoseconds range of three coupled lines on GaAs validate the model in severe test conditions of strong ohmic losses.<<ETX>>
