  • Path Planning for Mobile Robots by Means of Approximate Routes

    This paper describes a new method for the computation of paths for mobile robots in a known working area. The desired path connects a given starting position to a target position under avoidance of static obstacles. Path planning takes place off-line for the entire route and does not consider dynamic obstacles. This type of path planning can be used, for example, for fully automated storekeeping, in order to manoeuvre driverless vehicles flexibly and automatically through an entire storage depot. The method presented here uses auxiliary positions and computes several possible paths in the form of approximate partial routes. The computed paths vary in their overall length as well as the number and intensity of steering events. The results of this method are verified and discussed on the basis of a Matlab implementation.

  • Environmental impact of a telecommunication service

    The aim of this study is to apply the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology to a telecommunication (TLC) service. The automatic answering and messages storage service for the fixed network has been chosen as a case study because of its large utilization. Two different systems, providing the same service to the users, have been studied. The environmental impact of the "centralized answering machine" system and the "home answering machine" have been evaluated and compared. The environmental impacts of the answering and message storing service are mainly generated in the production of the apparatus supplying the service and their use phases. In the use of LCA methodology application to this service, several problems, like the functional unit and the boundary cuts, have to be solved. A TLC system is a multi-services provider, the allocation of the energy, materials and waste to one specific service have to be properly managed. The detailed study of components and material balance was done to perform the LCA. The inventory data was obtained from: a commercial database (where available), specialized literature and data sheet and direct experimental data. The study allows quantification of the decrease in the environmental impact for the centralized solution in order of magnitude. It is also shown that after very few years the usage phase of the service become more important in the environmental impact than the production phase.

    A common objective in simulation is enhanced understanding of a system; an opened model which can be storage, retrieval, sharing, and invocation in a distributed environment and among Web-based component applications is essential for this objective. As the development of Internet and WWW, the actions in the WWW are not only the human-machine interaction, but also Semantic Web-based machine -machine interaction, so a well-formed model needs opened and extensible interfaces, In the future, there will be large amount of models in the Web-based simulation, it is very simple that one problem mapped to a few solutions. This paper discusses a standard specification and an extensible interfaces of a model of simulation events and their triggers in Web-based discrete event simulation called TEA-XML (Triggers and Events Association XML); In conclusion, the compare of diagnose results of our model with other static models have been given, it is argued that the TEA-XML will be a part of foundation of the analysis of discrete-event simulation models in the Web environment.

    The waveform acquire rate is an important index to judge Digital Storage Oscilloscope's data acquisition performance. This paper introduces a method to improve the waveform acquire rate of the digital oscilloscope with a parallel coprocessor framework. Firstly, the relation between waveform acquire rate and dead time and the relation between waveform acquire rate and transient signal are analyzed from the perspective of probability theory. Then the design and implementation plans are explained in detail. Finally, this technology is applied into the design of a certain type of oscilloscope, and the relative testing results are provided.
