  • Radio goniopolarimetry: Dealing with multiple or 1-D extended sources

    The goniopolarimetric methods, also known as direction finding, are powerful methods which are used to obtain the intensity, the polarization, and the position of the low-frequency radio sources in the sky plane. These methods have been applied to several auroral sources and to the solar wind sources. The results obtained by these methods have allowed us to drastically improve our understanding of the processes occurring in the concerned regions. These methods are only valid for point source, or weak extended sources, whereas in many cases extended or multiple sources are expected. Some methods allow to obtain the characteristic size of the source, but not its shape or the intensity distribution inside it. In the present paper a method is proposed which can determine the intensity distribution inside an extended, but one- dimensional source and which can be applied to observations of two close sources. Application to simulated auroral and solar wind emissions are also presented.

    Generalized Stokes-Parameters Shift Keying: A New Perspective on Optimal Detection Over Electrical and Optical Incoherent Channels We consider block transmission over the incoherent channel, whereby several symbols either launched consecutively in time, or in parallel over several diversity paths, are equally affected by common isotropic phase and additively corrupted by circularly Gaussian additive noise. Our novel approach toward transmission over such a vector incoherent channel (VIC) model consists of a coherency matrix and generalized Stokes parameters descriptions of optimal detection inspired by classical optical polarization theory, but further extended to the dual context of generic electrical, as well as optical, communication. The four classical real-valued parameters introduced into optics by Stokes in 1853 to characterize the state of polarization of an optical beam, recently extended in a quantum-mechanical context to<tex>$D^2$</tex>generalized Stokes parameters, underlie our new alternative novel description of maximum a posteriori/maximum-likelihood (MAP/ML) optimal detection over the VIC channel. The modulation formats of polarization-shift keying (POLSK), differential phase-shift keying, and amplitude-shift keying, as well as recent and novel combinations thereof, will all be seen to be equivalent to a new conceptual form of modulation called generalized Stokes parameters shift keying. Several forms of the optimal MAP/ML receiver for vector multienergy transmission are developed, generalizing the classical scalar incoherent receiver and the known POLSK receivers.

  • Simultaneous hydrostatic pressure and temperature measurement employing an LP/sub 01/-LP/sub 11/ fiber-optic polarization-sensitive intermodal interferometer

    A fiber-optic LP/sub 01/-LP/sub 11/ polarization-sensitive intermodal interferometer is proposed to simultaneously measure hydrostatic pressure and temperature using the same sensing element. In analogy to the case of strain sensing it was found that the experimental parameters T/sub P/ and T/sub T/ describing the 2/spl pi/ phase shifts in the interferogram are significantly different for the X- and Y-polarizations of two polarization modes. This represents a fundamental phenomenon which can be put to use for simultaneous two-parameter sensing. The results obtained are found to be in agreement with a recently developed Muller-Stokes formalism describing polarization effects in the case of two-mode interference by means of spatial Stokes parameters. Initial calibration of the two-parameter simultaneous pressure-and-temperature sensor has been performed up to 100 MPa using a primary pressure standard (deadweight tester Harwood DWT-35).<<ETX>>

  • Optimized Polarization Scramblers for PMD Detection

    A polarization scrambler with a single electrooptic waveplate is presented. A preliminar version allowed to detect 680fs of PMD at 40Gbit/s within 9.6us. With a 2nd waveplate a scrambler independent of input polarization was realized.

  • Correcting the polarization leakage phases and amplitudes throughout the primary beam of an interferometer

    Polarimetric observations are affected by leakage of unpolarized light into the polarization channels, in a way that varies with the angular position of the source relative to the optical axis. The off-axis part of the leakage is often corrected by subtracting the product of the unpolarized map and a leakage map from each polarization image, but it is seldom realized that heterogeneities in the array shift the loci of the leaked radiation in a baseline-dependent fashion. We present here a method to measure and remove the wide-field polarization leakage of a heterogeneous array. The process also maps the complex voltage patterns of each antenna, which can be used to correct all Stokes parameters for imaging errors due to the primary beams.

    Spurious spikes in the third Stokes parameter have been observed in numerical simulations of the signal expected from the L-band radiometers to be flown as part of the Aquarius instrument. These signals are present over scenes with large contrast such as land water boundaries and are due to cross polarization coupling and the relatively large footprint of the antennas.
