    The Cassegranian-type optical system for driving the solar Stirling engine consisted of a parabolic mirror with a diameter (D) of 3.2m and a hyperbolic mirror with a D of 600mm. The parabolic mirror was of the segmental-type which consisted of 180 ellipsoidal mirrors made from glass plates, and the hyperbolic mirror was made from Al plate. The Stirling engine was developed by Isshiki et al in order to convert solar heat energy into electric power. For driving this Stirling engine, the cylinder head was directly heated by the sun rays converged by this optical system, and the temperature of the cylinder increased up to 700 /spl deg/C. Finally, the engine produced an output power of about 1kW.

  • Evaluation of displacement - time characteristics of stirling engine drive mechanisms - II

    The relative merits of the mechanical configurations tried out so far in Stirling prime movers is examined based on isothermal analysis taking into account dead volume. Single and double acting cases are considered. It is concluded that the modified Rhombic configuration proposed in the first part, is superior to the conventional Rhombic and Slider crank configurations, in single and double acting modes. Further investigations on frictional losses and transient effects are necessary in making a final choice of the drive con figuration for implementing the Stirling cycle.

  • Key Techniques for Designing Free Piston Stirling Engine

    In order to satisfy the requirement of power system for deep-space exploration, key issues for designing free piston Stirling engine were analyzed. With the thermodynamic and kinetic coupling designing ideas, we designed a set of free piston Stirling engine whose output power is 100W at operating pressures 8bar, hot space temperatures 700K, and cold space temperatures 300K, operated at 50Hz with helium as working media. Fin structure was selected for heater and cooler to increase heat exchange area and improve heat transfer performance. Temperature distribution of the engine was analyzed. The calculated results indicated that hot space and cold space temperature kept constant value, and the regenerator had a higher temperature gradient. Clearance seal technology was used in piston sealing. Influence of temperature distribution on the deformation of the clearance seal structure was calculated, and the simulation results show that the maximum radial thermal deformation was 90μm at the hot end of the displacer, and the maximum axial thermal deformation was 149μm at the hot end of the regenerator shell.

  • Mix of Energy Sources in Technology Centre of Ostrava

    The following article presents Technology Centre of Ostrava (TCO) in the Czech Republic describing the structure and main research areas realized by the project ENET - Energy Units for Utilization of non Traditional Energy Sources. The Technology Centre has its own energy mix consisting of alternative sources of fuel; sources that use operational gases from the storage part and also the energy from distribution network. More details of the research program dealing with transformation, accumulation and distribution of electric energy are presented in the article.

  • The control concept of multisource off-grid system

    The off-grid system is a network without connection to the external grid capable of autonomous mode operation. These off-grid systems use mostly renewable sources complemented by the emergency source for case of bad weather conditions. The most common alternative sources include for example photovoltaic systems, wind power plants, cogeneration units, hydrogen technology and power generators. This combination of individual sources can be labelled as a multisource system with a combination of storage devices and a smart control system. The main goal of this paper is to present the developed off-grid system, whereas the analysis of its operation for variety of modes is introduced namely.

  • International Contributions To Stirling Cycle Machine Technology

    The IECEC has been since 1966 the major forum for the dissemination of Stirling Cycle machine technology. Only once in the twenty-four year history of the IECEC has a paper not been presented which dealt with the Stirling. In total between 1966 and 1989 over 500 hundred papers have been published involving more than 1000 authors from 18 different countries. Interest in the Stirling has increased dramatically over the years, and shows no sign of abating. The IECECs must take much credit for this continued interest since the papers presented over the years represent the bulk of the modern literature dealing with Stirling technology. This paper is a review of this literature.
