  • Neural control for a perturbed vehicle steering system using parameter plane method

    The robust stability analysis of a neural control based vehicle steering system is considered in this paper. The neural controller can be linearized by the use of describing function first. Since the perturbed parameters including velocity and friction are existed in the vehicle steering system, the stability of equivalent linearized system is then analyzed by using the parameter plane method. According to this procedure, the amplitude and frequency of limit cycles caused by the neural controller can be figured out clearly in the parameter plane. Moreover, the limit cycles may be suppressed by adjusting the control factors carefully. Computer simulation shows the efficiency of this approach.

  • Development of an automatic parking system for vehicle

    This research proposes an automatic parking system (APS) with a good maneuver performance for vehicle. The proposed configuration of the APS includes sensors information fusion, position estimation, path planning, and tracking algorithm. The on-vehicle verification demonstrated by means of the control of an electric power steering system for tracking the planned path. Parking space is measured up as the vehicle drives past with the aid of an ultrasonic sensor. And drivers can use a user interactive interface to select the parking space if it is big enough. Then steering movements take place on the basis of the pure pursuit tracking algorithm and the inertial navigation method. Simulation and experiment results show good performance in the verification of our automatic parking system under reverse parking and parallel parking cases, and the parking space requires just 1.5 times longer than vehicle length. Parking maneuvers will become safer and more efficient through the utilization of these advanced safety techniques for automatic parking.

  • DMC-PD cascade control method of the automatic steering system in the navigation control of agricultural machines

    In the navigation control of agricultural machines, in order to improve the precision and response speed of the steering control system, an automatic steering control method based on DMC-PD cascade control was proposed. The model of automatic steering driving mechanism was built through analyzing the mechanism and electric control principle. The model of steering mechanism for agricultural machines was identified in time-domain according to dynamic response data. A steering control model was built by combining both models. Based on this model, adopted cascade control structure, the inner loop designed a DMC controller for steering angular velocity, and the outer loop designed a PD controller for steering angle. A steering angular velocity control simulation was taken by Matlab MPC toolbox, and an automatic steering control experiment was carried out in a YANMAR VP6 rice transplanter. The experimental result indicates, the absolute value of steering angle tracking error is 0.5°, and tracking delay is 0.25s. Therefore, the DMC-PD cascade control method can satisfy the requirement of automatic navigation control for agricultural machines.

  • Energy Saving Analysis Using Pulse Width Modulation Techniques Controlling Electromagnetic Clutch in EPS System

    This paper deals with energy-saving advantage in a electric power steering system. Currently, electric power steering systems are commonly used for mini- sized vehicles, and reduction of electric energy of the electromagnetic clutch under non-steering condition is important for energy-savings of the EPS system to improve fuel economy. This paper describes a newly designed method using pulse width modulation techniques controlling the electromagnetic clutch and its experimental results. The electromagnetic clutch has lower energy loss with the advantage of changing with the assist characteristic in the electric power steering system. In addition, relationships between the motor current and electromagnetic clutch current in the system are analyzed for the basis of the electromagnetic clutch model, which accurately predicts the electromagnetic clutch transmitting torque through the motor to the steering rack.

  • Electro-hydraulic rear-axle steering for mobile cranes

    Although cranes are widely used for construction and loading operations, the casual observer rarely has the opportunity to view this technology up close. This article presents innovative control technology present in the mobile cranes produced by Terex Demag mobile cranes specializes in self-transporting road-capable cranes. These cranes are known for their versatility due to their high-capacity, telescoping booms. In particular, the Demag AC 160-1 mobile crane is a five-axle vehicle that uses an electro-hydraulic rear axle steering system, which increases maneuverability and enhances driver comfort. The cranes also employs advanced control techniques in their touch screen crane control system. This computerized system allows the operator to enter load data and desired operation sequences. An electronic load sensing system then controls the hydraulic pumps to maintain the necessary force levels. For safety in critical situations, such as near power installations or chemical plants, the operator can specify a safety zone, which cannot be penetrated by the boom. Finally, the operator can specify the gripping sensitivity of the manual controls to allow precision operation for assembly work.

  • Control Strategy for Four-Wheel Steering Vehicle Handling Stability Based on Partial Decoupling Design

    In order to obtain a new steering control structure for vehicles equipped with four-wheel steering system, a linear model of the lateral dynamics is used in this paper. By introducing vehicle sideslip control and yaw rate control decoupling, a more accurate sideslip and yaw rate controller is used for lateral dynamics model of four-wheel steering vehicle, the sideslip and yaw rate controller is based on a linear multivariable combined with lateral dynamics model and the front and rear steering angles. For illustration, a simulation example is utilized to show the robustness of the new designed controller. Empirical results show that the controller based on partial decoupling design has good robustness. The four-wheel steering system with good handling robustness stability can effectively restrain exoteric lateral interference and thus active rolling handling control and tracking performance are solved.

  • Modeling and verification of steering torque feedback system for driving simulator

    Based on the sensitivity analysis results, the parameters in the steering torque feedback formulation (Eq. (1)) is adjusted. For verification, the simulation results based on steering torque feedback model are compared with real vehicle experimental results, as shown in Fig. 3. The results show that the simulation matches well with the real vehicle experiment, which demonstrates that the proposed steering torque feedback model has sufficient accuracy in simulating steering torque feedback. The future research will include further enhancing the model fidelity with improved tire reactive torque model, and further investigating the desired steering torque feedback for better customization to satisfy different drivers under various driving conditions.
