Some of this work was carried out to remedy faults in the generators. Nevertheless, some of the most severe disturbances recorded during monitoring have been caused by generators and because of the routine testing, clinical equipment is exposed to these generators routinely. Many manufacturers do not know the capability of their equipment to withstand electrical disturbances. Certainly, matters are improving with the implementation of IEC 801 but some of the disturbances described fall outside the standards. It is important for manufacturers to take account that the equipment may be subjected to the switchover to the back-up generators.<<ETX>>

    Many data centers, medical complexes, government facilities, factories and other commercial buildings have standby electrical generators. Quiet for most of the year, the generators are only used in the event of a power outage or for periodic testing. Portland General Electric (PGE) offers a program aimed at supplying capacity resources that utilizes these hidden resources to their full potential as a single aggregated generating peaking plant. PGE's "dispatchable standby generation" (DSG) program currently ties together 15 MWs of standby generators to support peak power demand on PGE's system and to ensure reliable service for customers. This power can also help avoid buying wholesale power when prices are skyrocketing or may allow less expensive resources to be utilized while DSG power can be counted as reserve capacity. DSG generator power first supplies power to its designed load at the facility and any excess power flows into the PGE system. To the PGE system grid, this appears as a drop in load and a small increase in supply. Finally, PGE links the GenOnSys application to PGE's system control center's energy management system via a secure fiber connection.

The power dissipation while selecting a wordline is suppressed by stepping down the selected-wordline potential. Moreover, to reduce the standby power, a switched-capacitor-type boosted-pulse generator, which is controlled by an address transition detection (ATD) signal, is used. A 61 kword/spl times/16-bit organization SRAM test chip was fabricated using the 0.5-/spl mu/m multithreshold-voltage CMOS (MTCMOS) process. The power dissipation in the memory array is reduced to 57% (1 mW) at 10 kHz operation in comparison with the conventional boosted- wordline scheme.

  • Probabilistic performance assessment of a roof top wind, solar photo voltaic hybrid energy system

    The escalation in electrical energy costs associated with fossil and nuclear fuels, and enhanced public awareness of potential environmental impacts of conventional energy systems has created an increased interest in the development and utilization of alternate sources. Photo voltaic and wind energy sources are being increasingly recognized as cost effective generation sources in small isolated power systems. A realistic cost benefit analysis requires evaluation models that can recognize the highly erratic nature of these energy sources while maintaining the chronology and inter dependence of the random variables inherent in them. This paper reports the probabilistic performance assessment of a wind, solar photo voltaic (SPV) hybrid energy system. A 400 watt wind electric generator (WEG), 840 WP (peak watt power) solar photo voltaic power generator, 6/spl times/75 Amp-Hour (Ah) backup storage batteries, charge controller (CC), 1 KVA inverter (INV), etc were designed, integrated and optimized to predict the behavior of generating system based on available local wind / solar and load data at Vasavi College of Engineering, Hyderabad, India. Storage batteries can be designed for various hours of uninterrupted power supply in the event of wind & SPV energy failures. This model is useful for evaluating the probabilistic reliability evaluation of generating systems and gaining a better insight in the component sizes needed before they are built. The loss of supply and effects of the randomness of the wind and solar radiation's were presented. The wind solar photo voltaic hybrid energy system (WSPVHES) is working satisfactorily. The above system is reliable and economical for remote applications.

  • Reliability Evaluation and Need Based Storage Assessment for Surety Microgrids

    This paper presents a Monte Carlo simulation based approach to estimate the interruption duration distributions at the load buses in a micro grid for the determination of need based storage assessment. Energy limited nature of storage devices is considered for the reliability evaluation. Time variable load and generation profiles have also been incorporated in the method to obtain more practical distributions of interruption durations. The method is demonstrated on a ten bus test system and the results are explained.

    Japan Storage Battery Co., Ltd. developed new prismatic lithium-ion batteries for the stationary applications such as short-period backup power sources, especially for demand of the high-rate discharge capability. Our lithium-ion batteries have a rated capacity ranging from 10 to 80 Ah capable of continuous full discharge at from 5 to 10 C rate with about 1/3 and 1/4 of the lead-acid battery with the same energy in the volume and weight, respectively. Our battery module consisting of the lithium-ion battery with battery management unit (BMU) exhibits extremely the excellent high-rate discharge performance, which leads to make the 5 kVA power supply system half in both size and weight compared with the conventional one equipped with lead-acid battery. Furthermore, the calendar life of longer than 10 years at room temperature is to be predicted for our lithium-ion battery using improved positive and negative active materials, based on the battery-life theory.
