On the Analysis and Design of Spurline Bandstop Filters

The parameters of general two-coupled lines and symmetric three-coupled lines in an inhomogeneous medium for the lossless case are obtained. The impedance and chain matrices of spurline bandstop filters are derived. One-section spurline bandstop filters with their stopbands centered near 33 GHz have been designed and tested. There is excellent agreement between the experimental results and those predicted theoretically.

  • A novel class-E power amplifier with an asymmetrical spurline filter and its linearization

    The third-order intermodulation coefficient (IMD3) is an important measure of linearity of a PA, and it is always measured using a two-tone excitation signal. A two-tone excitation signal with equal amplitudes and a frequency spacing of 10 MHz is adopted in this simulation. For comparison, both the measurement results of the proposed PA without EER linearization technology at a constant drain bias of 35 V with two test signals at 995 MHz and 1005 MHz and the proposed PA with EER linearization technology are given. According to the Fig. 3(a), compared to the PA without EER, the output power of the PA with EER declines less than 1 dBm on average. However, the IMD3 is improved significantly by using EER linearization technology. Fig. 3(b) shows the IMD3 characteristics versus output power. It is showed that the IMD3 of the class-E PA with EER is improved by 12 dB on average than the IMD3 of the PA without EER, and the best improvement of 14.9 dB is achieved at the output power of 38 dBm. As showed in Fig. 3 (c), the IMD3 of the class-E PA has improvement of 17.4 dBm at the input power of 21 dBm, compared to the class-E PA without EER. Fig. 3 (d) shows that the class-E PA with EER has a much lower IMD3 than the PA without EER at the same level of gain. The results demonstrate that by using the EER linearization technology, the linearity of the class-E PA with an ASF is improved obviously.

  • Design of microstrip interdigital bandpass filter with suppression of spurious responses for L-band wireless communication applications

    In the present paper, a compact L-band microstrip interdigital bandpass filter (BPF) with spurlines is designed. In the proposed microstrip interdigital BPF, spurious responses are suppressed and stopband attenuation is better than -14 dB everywhere upto 8 GHz excepting that near centre frequency of 4.87 GHz. The 3-dB bandwidth of the proposed BPF is 970 MHz (0.99 - 1.96 GHz) with a centre frequency of 1.475 GHz. The insertion loss value of the proposed BPF varies from 0.16 dB to 0.61 dB over the frequency range of 1.04 - 1.91 GHz. In the desired 3-dB passband, group delay is better than 2.8 ns. The proposed BPF is suitable for the application of satellite navigation like global positioning system carriers which are in the L band, centered at 1176.45 MHz (L5), 1227.60 MHz (L2), 1381.05 MHz (L3), and 1575.42 MHz (L1) frequencies, amateur radio and digital audio broadcasting.

  • Design of wide band microstrip equalizer using spurline

    A broad-band microstrip amplitude equalizer with spurline resonators is proposed. The resonator is composed of an open stub and a resistance. As a result of using this new structure, the equalizer not only supports broad-band performance with large equilibrium, but also exhibits an ultra-reduced size compared with the traditional microstrip equalizer. Through numerous simulation experiments by HFSS (High Frequency System Simulator), a broad-band (6 GHz~18 GHz) equalizer has been designed, fabricated and measured. The measurement data generally matches well with the simulated results. It shows that this structure is an effective method of designing microstrip equalizer.

  • A tunable compact bandstop filter using meander spurline and folding open stubs

    To achieve compact structure and better frequency characteristics, a tunable bandstop filter is discussed in this paper. Compared to the conventional bandstop filter with open stubs, the proposed filter can obtain a more compact structure by using folding open stubs and can acquire wider rejection bandwidth and deeper maximum rejection by employing the meander spurline slot. Moreover, the frequency characteristics of the proposed filter can be tuned by adjusting the physical size of the meander spurline structure. Measurement results that support the performance of the design concept have also been completed.

    This paper presents a novel circuit structure of a compact tunable dual-band bandstop filter (DBBSF). This design combines two controllable traditional approaches in one filter: spurline section and stepped impedance resonator at 2.4 GHz and 3.5 GHz respectively. This filter was loaded with p-n junction varactors and tunable barium strontium titanate (Ba<sub>0.7</sub>Sr<sub>0.3</sub>TiO<sub>3</sub>, BST) ferroelectric capacitor to tune their frequency response. The center frequency of the first stop band can be tuned from 2.1GHz to 2.4 GHz by loading a varactor diode on the spurline section. By loading the stepped impedance resonator (SIR) with a similar varactor, the center frequency of the second stopband can be tuned from 3.5 GHz to 4.48 GHz. The center frequency of the first band can be tuned from 1.9 GHz to 1.99 GHz by loading the ferroelectric capacitor to spurline section by applying a DC control voltage from 0 V to 6 V. By embedding the stepped impedance resonator with a similar ferroelectric capacitor, the center frequency of the second band can be tuned from 3.3 GHz to 3.54 GHz with a DC control voltage from 0 V to 6 V.
