    In this paper, the dynamic overmodulation characteristics of current-regulated carrier-based high-performance pulsewidth modulation (PWM) voltage-source inverter drives are investigated. Dynamic and steady-state overmodulation operating modes are clearly distinguished, and the requirements for obtaining high performance in each mode are shown to be significantly different. Dynamic overmodulation characteristics of the modern triangle intersection PWM methods are modeled and shown to be unique for each method. The study reveals space- vector PWM (SVPWM) exhibits a minimum voltage magnitude error characteristic. It also indicates all the advanced triangle intersection PWM methods, including SVPWM, have limited dynamic overmodulation performance. To enhance the performance, an algorithm with superior performance is adapted from the direct digital PWM approach. Detailed induction motor drive simulations and experimental results illustrate the characteristics of modern triangle intersection PWM methods and the performance gained with the new dynamic overmodulation algorithm.

    The authors present an analysis of three phase DC to AC inverters with general deterministic pulse width modulations having randomized pulse positions within the modulation intervals. The analytical formulations for both the harmonic power spectrum and the continuous power spectral density are plotted for the often-used trapezoidal modulation, and these are compared with scope traces showing the actual microprocessor implementation of the scheme.<<ETX>>

    Familiar special microprocessor with PWM pulse generator cannot provide enough PWM pulses for multi-modular converters or multilevel converters. Field programmable gate array (FPGA) is applied to implement the multichannel PWM pulse generator with no synchronization and communication trouble due to the single chip structure of FPGA compared with the multi-microprocessor scheme. A three-phase voltage source 5-level cascade inverter prototype with sample time staggered space vector modulation is accomplished to verify the correctness of the proposed multichannel PWM pulse generator

  • Regular-sampled harmonic elimination/minimisation PWM techniques

    Recent development are surveyed in regular-sampled pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques which allow harmonic minimization and also harmonic elimination to be generated online in real-time using a simple microprocessor software algorithm. It is shown how, with suitable modification, the conventional regular-sampled PWM techniques can be simply extended to allow harmonic-minimization and also harmonic-elimination PWM to be closely reproduced using simple algebraic equations. Using these optimal regular- sampling PWM techniques, it is possible to produce optimized PWM inverter drive, uninterruptible power supply, and static frequency converter performance, up to quasi-square-wave operation. All the detailed theory, mathematics, and equations needed to implement these new PWM strategies are presented, together with experimental results confirming the approach.<<ETX>>

  • Influence of the inverter characteristics on the harmonic losses in PWM fed traction motors

    The paper focuses on the effects of the inverter characteristics on the losses increment traction motors fed by pulse width modulation (PWM) controlled converters. Using the MATLAB soft, the AC-DC-AC equivalent model is founded on the principle of sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM). The harmonic spectrum of steady-state operation is simulated using this model. In particular, the influence of the following inverter parameters is considered: modulation index, rise time of pulse and switch frequency. The curve of harmonic loss factor (HLF) with a variation of these parameters is given. The simulation results can be used for purposes, such as loss-optimized design of converter machine system, and cooling system design.
