Provides an abstract for each of the invited presentations and a brief professional biography of each presenter. The complete presentations were not made available for publication as part of the conference proceedings.

Technology '89: peripherals

IEEE Spectrum, 1989

Notable developments during 1988 are summarized. Among them are: the choice of an optical-disk drive over the more common magnetic Winchester drive for the NeXT Computer System; the push toward smaller, faster, denser magnetic drives; the possibility of lighter-weight laptop computers suggested by the announcement of a 2 1/2 inch, 20-Mbyte Winchester hard-disk drive; and the continuing trend toward more ...

DBIMOS: the mix in one approach

Euro ASIC '91, 1991

The DBIMOS technology is a major step forward towards system integration. The 100 V DBIMOS, 40 V bipolar and 18 V CMOS transistors allow the smart interface market to be served. This market demands high performance analog functions, advanced signal processing, logic circuitry and high voltage and high current drivers to be combined on a cell-based ASIC. The target market, ...

A burst-mode LSI equalizer with analog-digital building blocks

1984 IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference. Digest of Technical Papers, 1984

The development of a 200Kb/s digital subscriber loop equalizer using an analog-digital standard cell building block design system will be described. The circuit uses a 2μm CMOS, a single 5V suoply, and includes 40dB\sqrt{f}AGC and bridged tap equalizers.

An Integrated System Supporting Effective Indexing, Browsing and Retrieval of Microsoft Powerpoint Presentation Database

22nd International Conference on Data Engineering Workshops (ICDEW'06), 2006

In this paper, we present an integrated system supporting effective indexing, browsing, and retrieval of Microsoft PowerPoint presentation databases. Our main achievement is that we provide an efficient representation that is automatically generated from semantic multimedia content analysis of presentation slides. We also improve the effectiveness of our poster representations of presentation slides and in turn enhance the performance of ...

  • An Integrated System Supporting Effective Indexing, Browsing and Retrieval of Microsoft Powerpoint Presentation Database

In this paper, we present an integrated system supporting effective indexing, browsing, and retrieval of Microsoft PowerPoint presentation databases. Our main achievement is that we provide an efficient representation that is automatically generated from semantic multimedia content analysis of presentation slides. We also improve the effectiveness of our poster representations of presentation slides and in turn enhance the performance of document understanding. Moreover, we help users with no or less domain knowledge locate presentations within a large database by our summarized presentation posters and information/document centric search algorithm. Finally, we comprehensively analyze the performance of our system with both quantitative comparisons and qualitative survey.

  • Spatiotemporal annotation graph (STAG): a data model for composite digital objects

In this demonstration, we present a database over complex documents, which, in addition to a structured text content, also has update information, annotations, and embedded objects. We propose a new data model called spatiotemporal annotation graphs (STAG) for a database of composite digital objects and present a system that shows a query language to efficiently and effectively query such database. The particular application to be demonstrated is a database over annotated MS Word and PowerPoint presentations with embedded multimedia objects.

  • DILIGENT: a digital library infrastructure for supporting joint research

Through the handling of new type of documents digital libraries have the potential to revolutionize the way in which joint research is conducted. In order to make this possible, digital library systems based on new technologies must be introduced. This paper briefly introduces DILIGENT, a digital library system that is being developed by integrating digital library and grid technologies, and it discusses the new types of documents that it is able to support through the merge of these technologies.

  • LAN protocols for high-performance distributed and concurrent computing

The number and variety of evolving high-performance distributed and concurrent applications motivate the development of novel and more suitable protocols for their support. We have developed a protocol framework within which concurrent applications may be developed and executed in a straightforward manner on heterogeneous LANs/ The protocols are specifically oriented towards the needs of concurrent applications, and are designed to be robust, efficient and lightweight. The protocols offer reliable and fast packet delivery in a variety of modes, including point to point broadcast, and dynamically variable multicast semantics. In addition, they support several high-level concurrent computing funcuons in an integral mamner, including global extrema and other arithmetic operations, polling, distributed consensus, and synchronization mechanisms. We discuss the salient design aspects of these protocols, describe the syntax and semantics of the user- interface protocol primitives, and, present performance results for varying network sizes and types.
