    Sensitive and quick-response nonlinear inductance characteristics are found for high-T/sub c/ superconducting (YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7-x/) disk cores at 77 K in which soft magnetic BH hysteresis loops are observed. Various fast- response magnetic devices such as modulators, amplifiers, and sensors are built using these cores. The magnetizing frequency can be set to more than 20 MHz, which is difficult to do with conventional ferromagnetic bulk materials such as Permalloy, amorphous alloys, and ferrite. New fast-response fluxgate- type magnetic-field sensors made from these cores, using AC and DC voltage sources, are presented. The former is used for second-harmonic type sensors, whereas the latter is for voltage-output multivibrator-type sensors. Stable, fast-response sensor characteristics were obtained for two-core multivibrators.<<ETX>>

    The noise characteristics of double-layered perpendicular media having an Fe- Ta-C soft-magnetic underlayer were investigated. It was revealed that changes in soft magnetic properties and a consequent increase in media noise occurs when C or Ta are reduced from the standard composition. Two-dimensional spike distributions were observed in a medium using the standard Fe-Ta-C composition, possibly caused by temperature inhomogeneity during the annealing process. It was also concluded that the noise contribution of the spikes was minimal for disks using an Fe-Ta-C SMU.

  • Interfacilly Disordered FePt hard/soft Stacked Structures

    L10-FePt is a promising material for ultra high density magnetic recording media due to its high magnetocrystalline anisotropy (Ku). However, the switching field (Hsw) of the L10-FePt particle is too large to write by the currently used write head. Hard/soft stacked media are proposed to solve this problem. Recently, we demonstrated that the coercivity of isolated FePt particles can be reduced by introducing a thin disordered layer on FePt particles by capping them with amorphous Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>. Since the Ku of the disordered FePt is much smaller than that of the L10 FePt, the interfacially disordered FePt particle is equivalent to the hard/soft stacked structure. In this study, we have investigated the magnetization reversal process using the partially disordered FePt particles that are smaller than the critical size for coherent rotation.

  • Magnetic domain structure of micro-patterned PtMn/NiFe exchange bias bilayers

    The magnetic domain structure of the micropatterned PtMn/NiFe exchange bias bilayers during magnetization reversal prepared by ion beam and physical vapor deposition were investigated. Using magneto-optic Kerr effect magnetometry (MOKE) and Kerr microscopy, the magnetic properties of the stripe array created using a 25 keV Ga/sup +/ focused ion beam (FIB) were also analyzed.

  • Development of a slotless tubular linear interior permanent magnet micro motor for robotic applications

    This paper presents the development of a slotless tubular linear interior permanent magnet (TLIPM) micro motor for drive application in micro robots. Important design criteria are established based on the results of both analytical and numerical methods. The flux density distribution in the air gap, the electromagnetic force, and the motor inductance etc. are analysed and predicted by the finite element analysis (FEA).

  • Perpendicular anisotropy in Fe-Pt thin films doped with Ag

    Summary form only given. Recently equiatomic iron-platinum alloys have attracted much attention due to their high magnetic anisotropy energy in the ordered L1/sub 0/ phase. Fe-Pt based films are considered as a promising candidate for ultra high density recording. In order to meet the requirement of the perpendicular recording, several efforts have been made to obtain perpendicular anisotropy in Fe-Pt films, which possess the in-plane easy axis in normal preparation conditions. In this paper we report a very simple method to obtain perpendicular anisotropy in Fe-Pt thin films, by Ag doping with a proper annealing.
