  • Self-contained portable electric mine lamps

    The considerable number of mine explosions caused by defects of the Davy safety lamps has encouraged the development of electric lamps. Satisfactory results, however, have been obtained only since the invention of the tungsten lamp, permitting the use of smaller storage batteries. The general requirements for electric lamps are: absolute safety, uninterrupted production of light for at least one shift, and a foolproof design. Prizes offered by the British Government in 1912 for the best electric lamp, resulted in 197 different constructions being submitted. The first prize was awarded to a German lamp, which since that time has been used with great success all over Europe and which is also being introduced in this country. The construction of this lamp, consisting of several types for different requirements, and the methods of handling it in actual service, are fully described. Some figures covering repairs and renewals are given. In concluding, the author mentions the only objection that can be raised against electric portable mine lamps, that they cannot be used as detectors of mine gases, as Davy lamps can, and says that for this purpose devices distinctly separate from the lamp will have to be adopted.

And the system realizes real-time inspection of customer service staff. In view of the camera image acquisition and transmission, we proposed a remote monitoring strategy based on Windows XP. We use the Open Source Computer Vision Library (OpenCV) as a base for video capture support. And the Socket Network Programming is used for image data transfer. Experiments show that the strategy is reliable and effective.

  • High-frequency oscillations n high-pin-count ECL devices

    Examines high-frequency oscillations experimentally observed in high-pin-count ECL ASIC (emitter-coupled-logic application-specific integrated-circuit) devices on high-speed testers. A special test chip was designed to determine experimentally the conditions that create such oscillations. Analytical studies agree closely with the experimental results. Design guidelines are established for the ECL chips and packages to use them, as well as means to eliminate oscillation on the tester. Results confirm that stable operation of the ECL chips can be maintained without speed limitations, as long as certain conditions are met by chip and package designers.<<ETX>>

  • Energy-efficient biotelemetry system with Nano IP

    Technical advancements in embedded systems, wireless communications and physiological sensing allow small size, light weight, ultra low power, and intelligent monitoring devices. A number of these devices can be integrated into energy efficient biotelemetry system with Nano IP, a new enabling technology for health monitoring, sports and military applications. The sensing unit which is wearable device consists of sensors and integrated circuits. These devices are capable of performing health monitoring activities such as heart rate, breath rate, blood glucose, body temperature and nerve stimulus with a personal computer and then monitored parameters can be send to necessary place through Nano IP communication protocol suit. An energy- efficient implementation of Wireless Body Sensor Networks (WBSNs) with embedded technology is designed featured with Work-on-Demand protocol. Dedicated for ultra-low-power wireless sensor nodes, the system consist of a low power Microcontroller unit (MCU), a Power Management Unit (PMU), reconfigurable sensor interfaces and communication ports controlling a wireless transceiver with GSM technology. The MCU, together with the PMU, provides quite flexible communication and power-control modes for energy efficient operations. This system will consumes less amount of power than its existing models, which is less than 3.3 volts. The measured parameters are interfaced with mobile devices through nano IP technology.

    Software development and system integration in designs with microprocessors and microcontrollers is often accomplished with the aid of an in-circuit- emulator (ICE). Designs incorporating an architectural microcontroller core cell and peripheral cells embedded in an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) present additional challenges in software development and system integration. A description is given of the ASIC UCS51 family and a fully functional ICE that supports it. The core and peripheral cells are emulated with multiple ICs, and the user logic is emulated with programmable logic devices. Results of the first customer application and use are included.<<ETX>>

  • A simplified model for a biomechanical joint with soft cartilage

    The modeling of joints on human limbs involves complexities due to the presence of articular cartilage at the synovial joint interface between mating bones, and the geometries involved. In this work, a simple yet innovative model for such a joint which can still capture most of the behavior of the bone joint system is presented. The model is applied to a ball and socket joint system with soft cartilage. The functional role of the soft cartilage material is replaced by a nonlinear stiffness field, whose properties are defined with relation to the ball position with respect to any fixed reference point within the socket. Bond graph modeling and simulation are used to study the system dynamics. Simulations indicate that this simple but significant model holds promise for applications in simulation, control of biomechanical, robotic and virtual reality based devices
