    In September 1979, the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County applied for a 301(h) waiver for modification of secondary treatment requirements for the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant. As specified by Environmental Protection Agency regulations, the waiver evaluated the environmental impacts associated with implementation of partial secondary treatment as compared to elimination of the wastewater discharge entirely. This paper presents a more practical evaluation by comparing both the economic and environmental impacts resulting from implementation of full versus partial secondary treatment at the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant.

  • Fuzzy modeling of an activated sludge process

    The activated sludge process is a wastewater treatment technique used at sewage disposal plants. The process should be controlled so that the BOD value of an effluent satisfies a certain criterion. The paper deals with a fuzzy modeling for the activated sludge process. The output of the fuzzy model is the BOD value. Our proposed fuzzy inference method is applied to the fuzzy model. Since the inferred conclusion using the proposed method has a membership function of simple shape, its meaning can be interpreted easily. Moreover, it can also be considered as a possibility distribution. In addition, its linguistic meaning is interpretable by means of labeling of the membership function with its linguistic term. Since the fuzzy rules of the model consist of labeled fuzzy sets in an antecedent part and also a consequent part, the input-output relation of the process becomes able to be easily understood. The operator can predict a possibility distribution of a future BOD value by simulation with the model, and can take appropriate judgement and control based on the prediction. In the paper, from the modeling result, the effectiveness of the proposed method and the fuzzy model are shown.

  • Experiment with Modified Attapulgite Clay on the Treatment of Domestic Sewage

The results showed that in domestic sewage COD removal efficiency and decolorization rate increased after a high temperature roasting or acid-modified of natural attapulgite clay. Overall, the treatment effect of 400 mesh attapulgite clay is better than 200 mesh, among which the best is 400 mesh natural attapulgite clay after 200°C calcination, COD removal efficiency reached 84.54%.

  • Management of Wastewater Treatment Plant's Performance by Control of Waste Sludge Discharge

    Waste sludge discharge is important in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) performance control. Nutrient removal was compared in three cases in this paper: (1) without waste sludge discharge, (2) with waste sludge discharge and mixed liquid suspended solids (MLSS) was 1200 mg/L, (3) with waste sludge discharge and MLSS was 3500 mg/L. Based on comparison of waste sludge discharge control, the effluent quality of the WWTP was improved.

  • Discussion of sewage sludge treatment on small towns in western China

    Nowadays the speed of urbanization is fast in China. And the quantity of sewage discharged from cities and towns is increased year by year. When sewage is treated, a large number of complex components of sludge will be produced inevitably at the same time. If effective treatment is not taken up timely, it would became a direct or potential threat for environmental. In this article, we discuss several effective methods of sludge treatment. According to the current status and characteristics of sludge treatment in western town. We believe that they will be the directions of development of sludge treatment and disposal for some time in the future which sludge will be back to field or be changed into biogas.

  • Simultaneous organic and strong nitrogen removal from sewage in a pilot-scale BNR process with food waste

    As sewage showing low C/N ratio in Korea has a small, but considerable amount of easily biodegradable organics, it is difficult to remove nutrients effectively. Approximately 11,434 tons of daily food waste that contain a lot of organic materials has been produced. The applicability of food waste as an external carbon source was examined in a pilot-scale BNR (biological nutrients removal) process for about 180 days. As the supply of the external carbon increased, the average removal efficiencies of T-N and T-P increased from 53% and 55% to 97% and 93% respectively. VFAs (volatile fatty acids) concentration of the external carbon source strongly affects denitrification efficiency and EBPR activity. EBPR (enhanced biological phosphorus removal) activity increased when T-N removal efficiency increased from 78% to 97%. In this study, several kinds of intracellularly stored PHAs (poly-hydroxyalkanoates) were observed. These were composed of 31% of 3HB (poly-3-hydroxybutyrate), 47% of 3HV (poly-3-hydroxyvalerate), 9% of 3HH (poly-3-hydroxyhexanoate), 5% of 3HO (poly-3-hydroxyoctanoate), and 2% of 3HD (poly-3-hydroxydecanoate) in biomass.
