    A full-wave analysis of planar electromagnetic band-gap (EBG) on anisotropic slab, which is characterized simultaneously by both nondiagonal second rank [∊] and [μ] tensors, is presented. The analytical procedure is based on Galerkin's method applied in the spectral domain, and the spectral dyadic Green's function for the considered structure is formulated based on Maxwell's equations directly. A kind of Uniplanar Compact EBG (UC-EBG) on anisotropic slab is computed efficiently, and the influence of the principal axes’ rotation in the transverse plane on their band structures are studied for several slab materials.

It is shown that multiple scattering from several underdense plasma clouds can cause considerable backscatter even though a single undense cloud is capable only of deflecting the ray through fairly small angles. In a case in which the deflection angles are small and many deflections occur before a ray passes through the scattering region, the ray density can be shown to satisfy a Fokker-Planck transport equation. A diffusion coefficient is obtained for this equation for the case of cylindrical Gaussian striations by means of a numerical raytracing program. The transport equation is solved by a finite-difference method to obtain scattering patterns and waveform distortion. The methods of solving the transport equation can be applied to the scattering of radio waves, laser pulses, and other radiation propagating in random media.

  • Indoor and outdoor substations in Pennsylvania

    This paper covers some points in substation design for installations for the lower voltages, including choice of location, type of building and arrangement of electrical apparatus. The subject is treated in three divisions, namely: customers' substations fed from the distribution system, customers' substations fed from the transmission system and company's substations. Attention is called to some of the advantages of both the outdoor and indoor substations for each of the different divisions. Points to be considered in the selection of locations for substations are outlined and several types of buildings, particularly the one of concrete slab construction, are described. Attention is also called to different arrangements of electrical equipments, which may be employed for installations of various sizes. Different schemes for installing high-tension switchboard apparatus are considered, attention being called to the open wire and the cell structure installations, with special reference to the concrete cell structure and the method employed in its construction.

  • Fluid flow in continuous casting mold with a configured nozzle

    The influence of a configured nozzle on the turbulent fluid flow in a continuous casting mold was investigated using the simulation program Visual Cast, which used the finite difference method and the SIMPLER algorithm. CAD software was used to construct the complicated nozzle in the calculational region. The simulation accuracy was validated by comparison with the classic driven cavity flow problem. The simulation results agree well with water modeling experiments. The simulations show that the velocity distribution at the nozzle port is uneven and the jet faces downward more than the nozzle outlet. Simulations with a configured nozzle and the inlet velocity at the nozzle entrance give precise results and overcome the traditional difficulty in determining the nozzle outlet velocity.
