  • Load frequency control with MWh constraint and regulation margin

    To improve the conventional frequency and tie-line power regulation, a tie- line bias control (TBC) based control scheme is presented in this paper. An additional control loop is set to the conventional TBC control loop to satisfy the MWh constraint and also to satisfy the regulation margin. By the additional control loop, the MWh through the tie-line is kept to its contract MWh not to violate the contract for power accommodation, and the required capacity for the LFC is always maintained to a certain extent even after having quite large load increase. In addition, the required fuel cost for the load-frequency regulation is evaluated.

Computer-optimized design data are giyen for a compact Ku-band prototype with an exponentially varying depth function that achieves 90° +- 1° differential phase shift shift within the separate 11.9-12.3-GHz and 17.5-17.9-GHz frequency bands. The maximum VSWR is only about 1.02. Further design examples include a linearly profiled depth function, which provides a short design, and a polarizer with iris thicknesses suitable for metal-etching manufacturing technique. The theory is verified by comparison with available measured results.

  • A human reliability analysis methodology for industrial and process facilities

    Reference is made to industrial accidents such as Bhopal and Chernobyl, and the increasing recognition of the critical role of humans in the safe and successful operation of complex process systems. Such accidents have focused attention on the evaluation of human performance reliability. The need for human reliability analysis (HRA), and the resulting progress in HRA techniques, have been especially strong in the nuclear power industry because of the visibility and perceived risk of nuclear plant operation. The underlying concept of HRA, to better understand the human interaction with complex systems, reaches beyond the boundaries of any single industry and makes HRA a useful tool in the assessment of safety and reliability for any process of power plant. A methodology for human reliability analysis is described, and its application to the general needs of industrial and process plant operation is discussed.<<ETX>>

    It is shown how to construct shot noise which, like the turbulent velocity field, is quite accurately univariate normal, but exhibits marked departures from bivariate normality at close ranges.

  • Statistical and testing background proving the viability of lightning strike prevention

    The need for reliable proof of the charge transfer system (CTS) technology has been pressed since its inception 30 year ago. However, the lack of useable data from the atmospheric physics community, the acceptance of operational statistics and the rejection of the CTS by some scientists have combined to retard its acceptance. Further, early failures were published world wide by those careful to neglect the more prevalent successes. Now prominent scientists have proven the scientific foundation. Thousands of customers endorse it and test programs have vindicated the claims. Unfortunately, mankind is prone to look for failures and ignore (or write off) the success in scientific breakthrough technologies, forgetting that all R & D programs experience some initial failures while on the path to success. This paper has been prepared to dispel the doubts and offer a system that has already saved its customers millions of dollars in lost property, production and probably lives as well.

  • The Human Element in Research and Industry

    This short article reemphasizes the need for "social engineering" as contrasted with the prevailing competence in the field of "technical engineering." Practical steps are enumerated for the establishment of a favorable atmosphere in which human beings can effectively and happily operate in the laboratory and factory. This covers suggestions for a reorientation on the part of the "worker" as well as on the part of management. The remarks are of a very general nature and applicable to all industries, but the experience on which they are based was gained in the electron-tube field.

  • Efficient beam propagation techniques

    It is shown that suitable modifications of the free-space-propagation operator in the standard fast-Fourier-transform beam propagation procedure yield a far more rapid code in the context of semiconductor rib waveguide calculations. The procedure curtails the diffraction experienced by the high-order Fourier components of the electric field and mirrors the structure of the recently introduced finite-difference beam propagation algorithm. It is used to investigate the propagation losses of a Y-junction composed of single-mode rib waveguides and illuminated by its normalized guided mode.<<ETX>>
