  • The application of acoustical subbottom profiling to engineering problems

    Acoustical profiling of the sea floor and the first 200 feet of the subbottom can provide the soils and foundation design engineer with a more complete picture of the geological conditions that he has to take into consideration than any other present means of investigation. The acoustical reflection profiles can be supplemented by core data and seismic refraction programs to give an even more complete engineering assessment. Examples of acoustic profiles will be shown and discussed and several brief case histories will be described. The various acoustic systems and their applications will be evaluated.

    This discussion is a brief survey of data needs for engineering projects requiring interaction with the sea floor. Data requirements are summarized with the present techniques for obtaining this data. The development of remote sensors by the EE is encouraged and the role of earth scientists in this development is emphasized.

  • A high speed multi-channel data acquisition system for remote acoustic sediment transport studies

    A multifrequency, multibeam acoustic system for tethered near-bottom sediment concentration and size profile measurement in the ocean has been developed. EXADAC, the data acquisition and control section of the system, is described. The system operates with four acoustic beams and three frequencies: 1.0, 2.25, and 5.0 MHz. The data acquisition system consists of a CAMAC crate, a PC/AT- compatible microcomputer, and a 9-track streaming tape drive. The system has been used in two field experiments.   • Application of shallow seismics in the characterization of the continental shelf Sergipe-Alagoas

    The following paper had its development on the continental shelf of Sergipe and southern Alagoas aiming the regional mapping of geomorphological features and sedimentary cover through the study of high-resolution shallow seismic imaging, combined with bathymetry and sedimentology data on the platform. This mapping is pioneer at this region and was part of Águas Rasas Norte Project, conducted by research lab GeoRioeMar of Universidade Federal de Sergipe in partnership with PETROBRAS/CENPES, in the context of MARSEAL Project - Environmental Characterization of Sergipe and Alagoas Basin. The seismic profiles were performed by the sub-bottom profiler Edgetech 3200-XS associated with the control of collected samples. Although the interpretation of geophysical profiles have been carried out with the data without post- processing, it was possible to identify distinct reflectors and features such as reefs, carbonate banks, channels and canyons, beyond the thickness and variance of the acoustic response of distinct near-surface sediments. This preliminary characterization makes more viable seismic studies in detail about the several features and refinement of boundaries between near-surface sediments of the continental shelf of Sergipe-Alagoas. It also gives support to the interpretation of the sedimentary evolution and the possibility to expand its application to other areas such as environmental, sedimentological and geotechnical studies.
