The main attraction related to this product, besides low cost and simplicity, is that its control is of intrinsic type. A time domain model implemented into a time domain computational simulator is used for theoretical investigations. The model validation is performed by means of a laboratory arrangement consisting of simplified electrical system and a saturated reactor compensator prototype. Typical theoretical and experimental system/compensator results are given to illustrate the overall behavior under voltage variations.

  • Application of DSTATCOM for Mitigation of Voltage Sag for Motor Loads in Isolated Distribution Systems

    This paper deals with one of the potential applications of distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) to industrial systems for mitigation of voltage dip problem. The dip in voltage is generally encountered during the starting of an induction motor. Isolated distribution systems are comparatively not as stiff as grid systems; so large starting currents and objectionable voltage drop during starting of an induction motor could be critical for the entire system. DSTATCOM is one effective solution for isolated power systems facing such power quality problems. The model of DSTATCOM connected in shunt configuration to such an isolated system (3phase, 42.5 kVA alternator) feeding dynamic motor loads is developed using Simulink and PSB of MATLAB software. Simulated results demonstrate that DSTATCOM can be a considered as a viable solution for solving such voltage dip problems

  • STATCOM Operation Strategy under Power System Faults

    The STATCOM (synchronous static compensator) operation can be adversely affected due to voltage source converter (VSC) over-currents and trips, during power system faults when its dynamic VAR support functionality is most required strict requirements of STATCOM losses and total system loss penalty preclude the use of PWM (pulse-width modulation) for VSC based STATCOM applications. This constraint of implementing VSC without PWM functionality, results in over- currents and trips of the STATCOM during and after system faults. In this paper, we propose an "emergency PWM" strategy to prevent over- currents (and trips) in the VSC during and after system faults, with slightly different B-H characteristics (due to manufacturing tolerances) for series connected transformers. Simulation results are presented for a 48-pulse VSC based plusmn100 MVAr STATCOM connected to a 2-bus power system. Simulation results validate the "emergency PWM" strategy to prevent VSC over-currents and to supply reactive power under all power system faults - single-line to ground, line-line and three-phase system faults.

  • Reactive power compensator with switched-LC networks

    Static compensators based on thyristor controlled reactors (TCR) are well suited for power factor correction under sinusoidal supply voltage and time- varying load situations, but they inject unwanted harmonic currents in the electric lines. Passive RLC networks can be the best choice to avoid this problem, but they are unable to follow load changes. Thus, a new reactive power compensator consisting of a set of parallel LC branches, which can be automatically switched, is proposed. This permits operation under nonsinusoidal conditions and time-varying loads. A control system, which measures the equivalent admittance on the load side, and sets the optimal LC configuration to minimize the reactive component of the line current, has been used. So, the synthesized compensator presents an equivalent harmonic- susceptance which is approximately equal (as given by its discrete structure) to that of the load (with opposite sign) within the adequate frequency margin. The results of numerical simulation and experimental results are presented.
