Due to the influence of the general situation of sewing industry, time and funds, combined with the uncertainty of the development result, the enterprises find hard to make decision on how and when to develop their new products or improve old ones, though they have eager and strong desire. To meet the very demands, the article introduces the QFD, sets up the house of quality, and ensures the best group of the improvement measures and contribution under the restriction of the cost.

  • A Study on Implementing Six-Sigma in Banking Service

    On the basis of the characteristics of services in banking, implementing six- sigma has become a challenge in this financial area. This paper introduced the status of six-sigma implementation in service in the past and present, and then overviewed some studies of implementing six-sigma in service, especially in banking. There are some factors that influence the results of implementation which we should take notice of; and also some limitations and new ways of implementing six-sigma. To apply six-sigma is not an easy job, and the measurement of service quality is not easy as that of the quality in manufacturing, so a choice of service quality models is quite important. This study tries to give an example by using the DMAIC model in dealing one short process. In this case, we use control chart to show how to identify special variations in a process so that we can improve it. It will be helpful for future researchers and the implementers of the six-sigma methodology.

  • An Integrated QFD and Kano's Model to Determine the Optimal Target Specification

    The excellence of Quality Function Deployment (QFD) methodology for translating customer needs into target specifications had been broadly known. However, a number of researches had revealed some methodological flaws. Those stated that QFD did not have a formal methodology to optimally allocate the resource available for product development. QFD also employed subjective technique in assessing the relationship between customer need and engineering characteristics. In addition, QFD implicitly assumed that the fulfillments of customer needs linearly related to customer satisfaction. However, Kano's model notified that the fulfillment of a customer need might have a nonlinear effect to the customer satisfaction. With regard to those issues, this paper presented an optimization model to allocate product development resource. The relationship between engineering characteristics and customer need was assessed using regression technique. Kano's model was integrated in the model to represent the relationship between customer needs and customer satisfaction. The proposed model was then applied to determine the target specifications of wooden single bed frame. The result showed that by using the target specifications obtained, a great customer satisfaction was created.

  • Assessment and quality improvement process in engineering and engineering education

    Embedding quality improvement methods into the teaching of engineering processes is not new to engineering education. Engineering graduates are expected to be able to develop and design products and processes that meet the need of customers within given constraints and follow known procedures to ensure quality results. Quality function deployment (QFD) is an internationally accepted planning technique that is used to ensure that quality is designed into a product by incorporating customers needs. The QFD matrix, or "house of quality", (HoQ) depicts the components of this process for determining engineering characteristics, parts characteristics, key process characteristics and production requirements. The QFD process will be used as a tool for understanding the assessment of academic programs and meeting the continuous improvement requirements embedded in Engineering Criteria 2000. The authors compare the QFD process with the development of an assessment planning process and outline considerations needed in developing an assessment tool (both content and process). Necessary components of quality assessment are outlined and an example provided from EC2000 learning outcomes.

  • System architecture modeling for technology portfolio management using ATLAS

    Strategic planners and technology portfolio managers have traditionally relied on consensus-based tools, such as analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and quality function deployment (QFD) in planning the funding of technology development. While useful to a certain extent, these tools are limited in their ability to fully quantify the impact of a technology choice on system mass, system reliability, project schedule, and lifecycle cost. The Advanced Technology Lifecycle Analysis System (ATLAS) aims to provide strategic planners a decision support tool for analyzing technology selections within a space exploration architecture (SEA). Using ATLAS, strategic planners can select physics-based system models from a library, configure the systems with technologies and performance parameters, and plan the deployment of a SEA. Key parameters for current and future technologies have been collected from subject-matter experts and other documented sources in the technology tool box (TTB). ATLAS can be used to compare the technical feasibility and economic viability of a set of technology choices for one SEA, and compare it against another set of technology choices or another SEA. System architecture modeling in ATLAS is a multi-step process. First, the modeler defines the system level requirements. Second, the modeler identifies technologies of interest whose impact on an SEA. Third, the system modeling team creates models of architecture elements (e.g. launch vehicles, in-space transfer vehicles, crew vehicles) if they are not already in the model library. Finally, the architecture modeler develops a script for the ATLAS tool to run, and the results for comparison are generated

  • Innovative design of water boilers based on QFD and TRIZ

    Based on the characteristics of Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and theory of inventive problem solving (TRIZ), an innovative design model based on QFD and TRIZ is proposed. Firstly, customer requirements are analyzed by the House of Quality. The problems that need to be solved in the design are identified. Then, the innovative design scheme of the product is obtained by applying the corresponding TRIZ' innovation principle. Finally, the model is applied to the innovative design of water boilers. The validity of the model is verified.

    Studying the application and development status of QFD and TRIZ theory, the paper proposes a new innovative design method of energy-saving products to overcome the shortcomings of traditional theories. This new method, which bases on house of quality of QFD, uses TRIZ theory to solve problems and DEA to select solutions. At the end it's obtained with practice that this method is effective.
