Quadrature amplitude modulation

Quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) is both an analog and a digital modulation scheme. It conveys two analog message signals, or two digital bit streams, by changing (modulating) the amplitudes of two carrier waves, using the amplitude-shift keying (ASK) digital modulation scheme or amplitude modulation (AM) analog modulation scheme. Although the proposed scheme requires almost the same amount of backhaul use as the conventional HIC scheme, its performance is close to the performance of the conventional soft IC scheme, particularly for high modulation order. We also derive the received signal-to-noise-and-interference ratio (SINR) of the proposed scheme to use adaptive modulation. Simulation results show that our SINR analysis is accurate and that adaptive modulation operates well under a target bit error rate (BER).

  • Set Partitioning and Multilevel Coding for Codes Over Gaussian Integer Rings

    This work demonstrates that the concept of set partitioning can be applied to Gaussian integer rings. It is shown that it is always possible to partition the Gaussian integer rings into subsets in a manner that the minimum Euclidean distance of each subset is strictly larger than in the original set. This enables multilevel code constructions for codes over Gaussian integers.

  • Transmitting Systems

    This chapter explains in detail the various transmitter specifications, their effect on system performance, and shows how to achieve, compute, and measure them. It provides the design equations together with clarifying exercises and simulations. The chapter presents the proof of design equations and explains in detail the underlying theory along with the associated mathematical treatment. When dealing with modern digital transmitting systems, special attention must be paid to the design of the RF power amplifier (PA). The chapter highlights several techniques that have been developed to deliver strong RF power while maintaining outstanding linear characteristics of the overall transmitting chain. It describes a laboratory setup for measuring peak to average power ratio (PAPR). The chapter gives an insight on the main transmitter specifications, and exercises to build familiarity and confidence in making educated use of design equations. The simple normalized Saleh model is very useful for the qualitative analysis of nonlinear phenomena in digital transmission.
