A CMOS optical detection array

In a system to be described a linear array of 27 photodiodes is used to convert optical signals into current pulses that are subsequently converted to voltages with an array of 27 transimpedance amplifiers. The 27 channel system includes photodiodes integrated using an N well CMOS process with 2μ minimum feature sizes.

  • Strong picosecond optical pulse propagation in semiconductor optical amplifiers at transparency

    The propagation of strong picosecond optical pulses in semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) is investigated numerically by taking into account carrier heating, spectral hole-burning, and two-photon absorption, as well as ultrafast nonlinear refraction. Very good agreement with published experimental results are observed in both the time and frequency domains. It is shown that the effects of two-photon absorption and ultrafast nonlinear refraction are very important in determining the output pulse properties for pulse energy larger than 1 pJ.

  • Spectral gain compression of optical amplifier cascades for WDM transmission

    The spectral gain compression has been experimentally confirmed by using 253 cascaded optical amplifiers for WDM transmission. The gain difference of 0.25 dB per amplifier over 5.6 nm is equivalently reduced to 0.06 dB per amplifier.

  • High-power near-diffraction-limited tapered amplifiers at 1064 nm for optical intersatellite communications

    The realization of high-power tapered amplifiers at 1064 nm on a low-modal gain structure is presented. More than 1.5-W continuous-wave optical output power at 3-A injection current is achieved with only 13-mW input optical power and a near-diffraction-limited output beam quality. The use of a low-modal gain structure in conjunction with a very low AR-coating value avoids the addition of cavity spoilers. The implementation of such amplifiers in an optical intersatellite communication system is studied. The devices showed excellent resistance to 160-krad proton irradiation. Preliminary aging tests on broad-area laser diodes demonstrate extrapolated lifetimes as long as 20000 h at 50/spl deg/C.
