How Students Prepare in Flipped Classrooms: A Case Study in a Physiology Class

2018 International Symposium on Educational Technology (ISET), 2018

The purpose of this study is to give suggestions on how faculty should design flipped classrooms. We conducted questionnaire and student interviews to clarify how students prepared for a physiology class at Kyoto University. The results of the questionnaire suggest that while there was a positive correlation between the preparation times and grades, some students' preparation was unproductive or inefficient. ...

Design and application of flipped classroom teaching model

2016 11th International Conference on Computer Science & Education (ICCSE), 2016

The single-chip microcomputer course is a strong theoretical and practical course. By the analysis on the current problems existing in the single-chip microcomputer teaching process, the current teaching methods are unfavorable to the cultivation of learner's personality and innovative talents. Flipped classroom can transform the students' passive learning to active learning, so it is completely necessary and urgent that flipped ...

Flipping a programming course: The good, the bad, and the ugly

2015 IEEE Frontiers in Education Conference (FIE), 2015

In the traditional form of teaching and classroom organization, lectures are given in class, and tests and examinations are given in class. The major drawback of this approach has been the difficulty of getting the students engaged in a traditional lecture. A computer science course in programming seems to be a natural class to implement a flipped classroom approach: individualized ...

  • How Students Prepare in Flipped Classrooms: A Case Study in a Physiology Class

Therefore, we conducted interviews with five students to clarify the obstacles for achieving an efficient preparation. Interviews showed that one student didn't prepare at all, while the other four spent too much time on preparation without all of them achieving a high score. Not everyone recognized the significance of preparation. Additionally, four students deployed two note-taking styles - they either copied almost every word from the slides or summarized the important points from the slides. On the other hand, a student with no preparation was able to achieve average grades merely by reviewing the learning contents after the class. We found that students didn't know how to prepare appropriately for a flipped classroom, therefore it is important for instructors to specify clearly what areas students should focus on and how to efficiently take notes during their preparation.

The single-chip microcomputer course is a strong theoretical and practical course. By the analysis on the current problems existing in the single-chip microcomputer teaching process, the current teaching methods are unfavorable to the cultivation of learner's personality and innovative talents. Flipped classroom can transform the students' passive learning to active learning, so it is completely necessary and urgent that flipped classroom method apply and practice in the teaching process of single-chip microcomputer course. Based on the analysis of current teaching model in flipped classroom, flipped classroom teaching model of single-chip microcomputer course based on micro-lesson is constructed. According the difficulty of the task, multi-level task is developed. Some achievements are obtained. Application of flipped classroom teaching model in the single-chip microcomputer course plays a key role for improving engineering students' practical operation and technical innovation ability.

  • Flipping a programming course: The good, the bad, and the ugly

In the traditional form of teaching and classroom organization, lectures are given in class, and tests and examinations are given in class. The major drawback of this approach has been the difficulty of getting the students engaged in a traditional lecture. A computer science course in programming seems to be a natural class to implement a flipped classroom approach: individualized pacing for theory with cohort based skill acquisition. A flipped classroom is a form of blended instruction where students learn course content outside of the classroom and either homework or other forms of active learning activities occurs in the classroom. Herein is a summary of our observations based on several semesters of implementing a flipped classroom and report on observations made. There are numerous advantages to flipping a class such as allowing for more interaction during the face-to-face class meetings; it also allows for deeper learning to take place as students get their hands-on practice. We explore these practices and more, and compare and contrast what worked and what didn't work from our experiences. We also identify procedures critical to success and what procedures we view as less important.

  • Challenges to flipped classroom adoption in Hong Kong secondary schools: Overcoming the first- and second- order barriers to change

The flipped classroom phenomenon has generated a lot of enthusiasm in teaching circles, but not all teachers have embraced this new paradigm. This paper discusses some of the challenges for Hong Kong secondary school teachers to adopt the flipped classroom approaches. Based on a study conducted parallel to a professional development workshop for teachers, a number of concerns regarding the use of flipped classrooms are identified and discussed. Dividing these concerns into first- and second-order barriers, themes in teachers' comments and feedback are identified, and potential approaches to addressing the concerns proposed.

  • The Implication of Flipped Classroom Model on Tuition-Free Graduates Majoring in Teaching for Perusing Part-Time Master of Education

This paper analyses learning styles and learning effects from a questionnaire survey of government sponsored graduates majoring in teaching for perusing part-time master of education. With flipped classroom model as a reference, the authors make a thorough analysis on a two-in-one learning style, which combines face-to-face learning with online learning. This work not only provides an efficient learning style, but also renders helpful information for tuition-free graduates majoring in teaching for perusing part-time master degree in education.

  • Digital randomness

Imagine that it's 1995 and you're about to make your very first online purchase. You open your Netscape browser, sipping coffee as the home page slowly loads. You then navigate to Amazon.com, a new online bookstore your friend told you about. As you proceed to make your purchase and enter your payment information, the address your browser points to changes from one starting with "http" to one that begins with "https." That signals that your computer has established an encrypted connection with Amazon's server. This allows you to send credit card information to the server without worrying that an identity thief will intercept the transmission.

  • Teaching reform and practice of the basic computer course based on flipped classroom

In view of the teaching actual situation of the basic computer course, taking C language programming as an example, this paper analyzes the characteristics of the course, and puts forward the reform program of the blended teaching mode combined with flipped classroom. The teaching effect improved significantly; it strengthens the students' ability of computational thinking, self-learning ability and innovation ability. Finally, this paper carries on the thinking and the summary to the teaching reform work, in order to continuously improve the course quality.
