  • Dynamic mechanisms of power system instability

    This paper presents a review of current research in voltage stability and a new model encompassing three mechanisms of dynamic voltage collapse. These three mechanisms are on-load tap changer effects, load dynamics, and generator dynamics. A small power system model simulates the combination of these three effects, showing how a long-term voltage collapse occurs. Insight into the effects of adding generator dynamics to current models are discussed. Finally, the popular idea of ignoring the small changes in frequency while studying voltage stability is analyzed.

DGA has more recently been applied as a diagnostic tool for predictive maintenance on load tap changers, LTC's, and oil filled circuit breakers, OCB's. The savings in maintenance costs based on DGA diagnostics are significant. Data interpretation for OCB and LTC dissolved gas analysis is empirical in nature and significantly different than interpretation of DGA data for main tanks. Ratios of heating to arcing gases are informative for LTC and OCB dissolved gas analysis interpretation.

The operation results show that this kind of control idea is feasible and it can effectively reduce the action number of tap and capacitor of on-load tap changer, thereby improving the voltage quality of power supply system.

  • Coordinated AVQC operations of EHV transformer's tap changer by fuzzy expert control system

    In this paper, we first outline the original fuzzy expert AVQC (automatic voltage and reactive control) method that has been in use at Tohoku Electric Power Company. We then investigate the mechanism of the inadequate motion of a transformer's tap changer. We propose an improved fuzzy expert control method to prevent unnecessary tap changer action. In order to validate the improved method, simulations of tap changer behavior under various operating conditions are conducted. The results of the simulations and analyses are also presented. In the last section, we briefly recommend utilizing on-load tap changers under critical operating conditions in terms of transient stability of a power system.

This is a complete approach to assess the condition of a power transformer, both the on-load tap changer as well as the transformer windings. This paper also presents several case studies of tap changer defects that are discovered with the dynamic resistance measurement function.

  • Impact of distributed generation on the operation of load tap changers in Canadian suburban benchmark distribution network

    This paper aims to identify the impact of distributed generation (DG) on the operation of load tap changers used in typical distribution networks. Distribution networks are typically equipped with an under-load or off-load tap changer, referred to as ULTC or OLTC, respectively, to control the voltage of the secondary winding of the substation or regulating transformer. The impact of DG on the operation of OLTC and ULTC is studied in this paper. The work presented is part of an ongoing project that aims to investigate the impact of integrating high penetration levels of DG and establish the maximum penetration limits of DG that can be integrated into typical Canadian distribution networks. For the limited space available, only the Canadian suburban benchmark distribution network is considered in this paper.

  • Modeling and analysis of discrete event behaviors in power system using Petri nets

    Apart from the continuous time phenomena various discrete events occur in an electric power system. Previously, the size and operation of the power systems were considerably small and centralized compared to the large, decentralized power systems of the present day. Each discrete event occurring in the power system was manually acknowledged and necessary changes were made in the system operation. But with the recent deregulation, the sizes of the power system have increased rapidly and it is becoming very difficult if not impossible to use the traditional methods. Specialized tools are necessary for modeling and analysis of the discrete events occurring in the power system. A number of formal languages, including Petri nets and finite state machines can be used for this purpose. This paper describes how Petri nets can be used for modeling and analysis of the discrete events occurring in a power system.
