  • The Past

    This chapter examines appropriate contemporary methods and tools towards the creation of novel 2.5dimensional (2.5D) printed surfaces. It aims to capture the briefest contextual background to ancient methods of 2.5D creation and representation, that provides the reader with suitable knowledge and insights as to the state of the art and qualities for twenty‐first century requirements. The chapter considers illumination, colouration and texture and its relation to the production of relief, as well as the conversion of 2dimensional (2D) to different degrees of relief. It explores the different two‐dimensional representational approaches to create the appearance of texture and relief. The chapter argues that ‘flat art’, such as paintings, drawings and prints, does not contribute to 2.5D printing. It looks at the relationship between texture, objects and artists' approaches to reproducing texture in their art. The chapter addresses the essential characteristics of a real‐life world and how these qualities can be transcribed into a synthetic scene.

  • Studies on the ageing behavior of various synthetic and natural insulation oils

    Dodecylbenzene (DDB) is now widely used in UK underground high voltage cables due to its biodegradability and improved gas absorbing properties. However, the potential of vegetable oils as high voltage insulation liquids has yet to be fully realized. These liquids could be used as direct replacements where traditional synthetic oils are currently used. In this paper we report on the ageing behavior of dodecylbenzene, mineral oil and a range of different vegetable oils. These were thermally aged under an oxidizing atmosphere and their ageing behavior was then characterized by ultra-violet/visible, infrared and dielectric spectroscopy techniques. Measurements of viscosity were also undertaken to supplement the spectroscopic data.

  • Generator Auxiliary Systems

    This chapter discusses the general nature of the five major auxiliary systems that may be in use in a particular generator: Lubricating‐oil system; hydrogen cooling system; seal‐oil system; stator cooling water system; and excitation system. In some plants, one may find an elaborate hydrogen cooling system panel where all hydrogen controls are located. The lubricating‐oil (lube‐oil) system provides oil for all of the turbine and generator bearings and also is the source of seal oil for the seal‐oil system. As a safety feature, there is often a second ac motor‐driven pump or a dc motor‐driven emergency seal‐oil pump provided. The excitation system also provides control and protective equipment that regulates the generator electrical output. The stator cooling water system (SCW) is used to provide a source of demineralized water to the generator stator winding for direct cooling of the stator winding and associated components.

  • Aging assessment of dielectric vegetable oils

    The combination of a dielectric solid (paper) and a dielectric liquid (mineral, vegetable, or silicone) is the most commonly used insulation system in power transformers because of the favorable dielectric properties of these insulations and the high heat capacity of the oil, which allows for cooling. It is known that temperature is the main parameter in determining the aging of these insulations and, therefore, the lifetime of a power transformer.

  • Auxiliaries Inspection

    Some generator auxiliary systems are required to be in service even when the generator itself is not in operation. This chapter provides a description of the things that should be inspected and checked during a generator outage for inspection and maintenance. In general, stators and rotors of rotating exciters should undergo inspection procedures similar to those that apply to the main generator. Abnormal readings can help to identify components for inspection in the lube‐oil system for the purpose of determining what the cause of the abnormality is. Inspection of the hydrogen cooling system, seal‐oil system, and stator cooling water system is usually done at every major outage. The major components of the hydrogen cooling system, seal‐oil system, and stator cooling water system should all be checked for general condition and operational functionality.
