  • All-optical waveform sampling

    In this paper, we will focus on optical waveform analysis based on all-optical sampling. In contrast to the case when using a fast-photo diode and electronic sampling this approach not only can have very high temporal resolution but also eliminates ringing artifacts that arise from non-ideal impedance matching in the electronic case. We rely on the use of four-wave mixing in a highly nonlinear fiber acting as a sampling gate. We expanded the approach above and by using four separate gates, each sampling different parts of a waveform at 25 GHz, we achieved real time sampling with a Nyquist limited bandwidth of 50 GHz. The concept was also extended to phase-sensitive mode by adding a local oscillator for coherent detection allowing constellation diagram analysis at 40 Gbaud.

    Now, the central load-bearing element used in manufacture of a fiber-optical cable, as a rule, is made of fiberglass. However the industry has faced a problem of increase its temperature characteristics. In this work it was revealed the factors influencing on thermostability of this composite at various levels (at a level of a link, molecules, at a macromolecular level). On the basis of the lead researchs and experiments the optimum structure of a binding composite is offered.

  • Temperature determination in optoelectronic waveguide modulators

    Optoelectronic devices are particularly sensitive to temperature changes induced by the absorption of light and the passage of current. In order to study the thermal issues arising in a InGaAsP-based Mach-Zehnder (MZ) optical modulator, a nonlinear finite-element thermal model of the device was constructed. The model considers the variation with temperature of both the thermal conductivity of the semiconductors composing the device and the optical absorption. To that effect, the optical absorption was measured inside the waveguide as a function of temperature, An experimental method using liquid crystals to measure the surface temperature was also developed. Both were used to evaluate the temperature inside a variable optical attenuator present on the modulator. Good agreement with the model and the experiment is found over a wide range of operating conditions. These tools are expected to play a key role in understanding thermal issues in future photonic devices, in view of the desire to integrate multiple devices on a common substrate and the continuous increase of the optical powers in fiber systems.
