  • Sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy on molecular chirality

    Summary form only given. We report the observation of the first sum-frequency vibrational spectra from a number of chiral liquids. The results are related to the influence of local chiral structure on selected atomic groups of the molecules. We shall focus our discussion on chiral liquids of limonene, which is a relatively small molecule with a simple chiral structure. Using appropriate input/output polarization combinations, we can selectively probe only the chiral component of the nonlinear optical susceptibility. We observe a clear circular dichroic response from the enantiomers of limonene in the CH stretch vibrations.

  • Temperature determination in optoelectronic waveguide modulators

    Optoelectronic devices are particularly sensitive to temperature changes induced by the absorption of light and the passage of current. In order to study the thermal issues arising in a InGaAsP-based Mach-Zehnder (MZ) optical modulator, a nonlinear finite-element thermal model of the device was constructed. The model considers the variation with temperature of both the thermal conductivity of the semiconductors composing the device and the optical absorption. To that effect, the optical absorption was measured inside the waveguide as a function of temperature, An experimental method using liquid crystals to measure the surface temperature was also developed. Both were used to evaluate the temperature inside a variable optical attenuator present on the modulator. Good agreement with the model and the experiment is found over a wide range of operating conditions. These tools are expected to play a key role in understanding thermal issues in future photonic devices, in view of the desire to integrate multiple devices on a common substrate and the continuous increase of the optical powers in fiber systems.

    Optical rectification is investigated for its potential in optical rectenna technology. Careful analysis of the second-order nonlinear susceptibility allows distinguishing rectification from artifacts. A demonstration using silver and gold nanoparticles on a substrate is presented.

  • Section-wise-exact coupled-mode theory of waveguide quasi-phase-matched second-harmonic generation

    We derive exact mathematical expressions for both the amplitude and phase evolution of optical waves due to linear and nonlinear interactions in a waveguide device and propose a section-wise-exact coupled-mode theory analysis for quasi-phase-matched second-harmonic generation in the waveguide. Section- wise-exact coupled-mode theory is readily applicable to nonuniform quasi- phase-matched gratings and can be useful as a quantitative method in their analysis and design. Using the method, several numerical results are presented for second-harmonic generation in periodically poled LiNbO/sub 3/ channel waveguides. In addition, we introduce a split-step method which takes propagation losses into account and which can include linear and two-photon absorption and waveguide losses.
