  • An Introduction to Kalman Filtering Implementation for Localization and Tracking Applications

    This chapter investigates the implementation of linear and nonlinear Kalman filters for localization, target tracking, and navigation. It formulates the positioning problem in the estimation context and presents a deterministic derivation for Kalman filters. The chapter introduces several types of Kalman filters used for localization, which include extended Kalman filter (EKF), unscented Kalman filter (UKF), ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF), and constrained Kalman filter (CKF). Implementation examples for localization, target tracking, and navigation of these Kalman filters are offered, and their associated MATLAB codes are presented. In general, an estimation algorithm predicts the quantities of interest via direct or indirect observations. The chapter mainly presents the estimation algorithm for both target tracking and navigation applications. Such applications include vehicular navigation, aircraft tracking and navigation, satellite orbit and attitude determination, etc. Finally, the chapter offers relevant and more advanced topics to the reader.

  • Nonlinear signal processing filters: A unification approach

    The paper addresses the problem of classification of nonlinear filters for digital signal processing and of unification of approaches to their analysis, design and implementation. It is assumed that the filters work in a moving window and, in each position of the window, produce an output signal sample as an estimate obtained from input signal samples within the window. The keys of the classification and unification are notions of estimation and neighborhood building operations. On the base of thorough analysis of a large variety of known filters, a set of estimation and multi stage (in general) neighborhood building operations is introduced that can serve as building blocks for the filter design. In conclusion, application of the approach to the filter design and implementations is briefly discussed.

  • Isolating the multipath component in GNSS signal-to-noise data and locating reflecting objects

    A filter to separate the effect of multipath in Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) data is presented. The filter removes multipath cleanly, and affects neither slowly varying trends (such as tropospheric absorption or variation in satellite range) nor high frequency components (such as ionospheric scintillation), and so is potentially useful in space-weather research. Similarly, the multipath data removed from the input data is minimally distorted, and contains useful information as to the multipath geometry. A method to locate reflecting objects using a form of spectral analysis is described.

  • Image sharpening using permutation weighted medians

    A class of robust weighted median (WM) sharpening algorithms is developed in this paper. Unlike traditional linear sharpening methods, weighted median sharpeners are shown to be less sensitive to noise or to image artifacts introduced by compression algorithms. The WM sharpening structure is extended to include data dependent weights under the framework of permutation weighted medians leading to sharpeners that have tunable robustness properties. A statistical analysis of the various algorithms is presented. Experiments illustrate the sharpening of images with compression artifacts and of images with background film-grain noise.
